He tugged her closer. “Are you okay?”

Her eyes flashed up. “Of course.”

He didn’t believe her for a second. But he didn’t push…not yet.

At her office, she stepped in first. Taylor smiled at them as she walked past.

“Hey, guys. Good lunch?”

“It was great.” But even the tone of Hannah’s voice wasn’t as light as usual.

When they stepped into her office, he closed the door, turning as she went to her desk and put her bag in the bottom drawer.

“Is it your head? Is it hurting?”

She paused at his words, and he wanted to go outside and find the fucker who’d hurt her and tear him apart.

“No. My head’s okay.”

He studied her, slowly crossing the space between them. “Is your blood sugar okay?”

“It’s in range.”

When he finally reached her, he gripped her hips, tugging her against him. “You gonna make me guess all day?”

“It’s silly.” Pink tinged her cheeks. “There’s so much going on with this threat and Brigid that this shouldn’t even bother me.”

Something was going on with Brigid?

Hannah’s gaze focused on his chest. “I don’t want to tell you.”

For some reason, that made him laugh. He lowered his head and kissed a spot behind her ear. “Please?”

She shook her head.

He kissed her again, this time on her cheek. “Is it Rachel?”

Her reaction was subtle. A slight tensing of her muscles. A small shift in breathing.

Bingo.

She gripped his arms. “Did you two ever—”

“No.” His answer was swift, interrupting before she could even finish that sentence. “Rachel and I have only ever been friends.”

She nodded quickly, but when she still didn’t look at him, he gripped her chin and tilted it up. “Hey. It’s only you, Angel. It’ll onlyeverbe you.”

Her bottom lip disappeared between her teeth. “I’m embarrassed that I feel jealous. I mean, I’m so glad that you have her. That she’s supported you for so long. It’s just that…there’s so much history between you two. I almost feel like I’m intruding when you’re together.”

“You’re never intruding. You’re the most important person in every part of my life. I care about her”—another tensing of her muscles—“but only as a friend. My love for you willalwaystrump everything and everyone else.”

“Even if I’m not a weapon?”

“I’llbe your weapon.”

Her eyes softened. “I love you.”

“I fall in love with you all over again every time I see you.”
