She swallowed. “It’s been a long morning.”
Because of him? Because he hadn’t been there when she’d woken up? Fuck, he was hurting her without even trying now. “I’m sorry.”
Tears gathered in her eyes. “I feel like I’m losing you.”
“I’m yours, Angel, for as long as you’ll have me.” When a tear fell down her cheek, he lowered his head and kissed it away. “And even if one dayyouchoose to leave, my heart will still belong to you.”
“Never,” she whispered, before resting her head on his chest, right over his heart. A heart that beat for her. Only for her.
He was holding her close when he noticed a handwritten note on her desk.
I know what you did, Hannah.
What the fuck wasthat?
“Who wrote that?” he asked before he could censor the anger in his tone.
She pulled away, following his gaze to her desk. “Um…I’m not sure. Someone left it for me.”
He frowned. “And you don’t know who?”
She shook her head.
“Can I take them?”
At her nod, he lifted the note and envelope from her desk and slipped them into his pocket.
She massaged her forehead. “I need to get back to work.”
His gaze flashed back to her. “Why didn’t you take the G70?”
“I don’t know. I needed the comfort of something I’d paid for myself.”
Her words cut a fucking hole into his chest. He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. And, damn, the kiss was all that kept the air moving through his lungs. “Please drive the G70. I need to know you’re in something reliable. If you don’t like it, we can go get something else. It just needs to be safe.”
She opened her mouth and almost looked like she was going to argue with him. But then she simply nodded. “Okay.”
Thank God.
One more kiss, then he whispered against her lips, “I’ll see you tonight.”
She nodded but looked like she didn’t quite believe him. And he didn’t blame her. He’d barely been home. He wanted to kick his own ass.
As he left her office, he passed Leo’s. The man was behind his desk, phone to his ear. When their gazes collided, there was a small tightening of his eyes before he gave Erik a small chin tilt.
Erik’s jaw clenched as he stepped outside. He didn’t like the guy. But then, maybe that was because he’d seen him get too damn close to his woman twice in two days.
The second he was outside, he hit a key on his phone before putting it to his ear.
“Hunter. To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Chandler…I need you to do something for me.”
His friend chuckled. “So what’s new?”
“I need a note fingerprinted. I also want protective detail put on Hannah.”
There was a small pause before Chandler responded. “Everything okay?”
