Brigid sucked in a long breath as she looked down at her hands. “I had this pit in my belly the whole time. It was like the second he was out, I knew I’d made a mistake, but it was too late. I couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d done to you. About the reasons why he was in jail. Then I caught him stealing my bank card. We had a huge fight, and I told him to get the hell out. That’s when he hit me.”

Henry growled, while Hannah clenched her friend’s forearm. “I’m sorry.”

She lifted a shoulder. “I got back that night after work, and his things were gone. I figured he’d found somewhere to live until he was due back in court. Then, last night, I got home and he was there with a gun. He asked for my phone. When I refused, he hit me with the butt of the gun and…and that’s the last thing I remember.”

Henry scowled. “I almost wish he was alive so I could murder him myself.”

“Me too,” Brigid said quietly, looking back to Hannah. “I was so scared you’d never forgive me.”

“I love you,” Hannah whispered, wiping a tear from her face. “Of course I forgive you.”

Brigid leaned into Hannah’s shoulder. “Thank you.”

Hannah shifted her gaze to Henry. “How are you doing after the Owen-Oden nightmare?”

“Okay, actually.”

Brigid frowned. “Why do you have your I-did-something-dirty look on your face?”

He laughed. “Not dirty, per se, but I was texting that guy I like last night, and he may have come over to…console me.”

“You’re shitting me?” Brigid gasped.

“Nope.”

Hannah’s brows shot up. “Do we finally get a name for this secret man?”

“Leo.”

Hannah almost choked on her tongue. “Leo, as in—”

“Leo, who you work with. Yeah, him.”

Brigid straightened. “I didn’t know—”

“He was into hot, ruggedly handsome men like me? I know. Luckily, I did.”

Hannah reached out and squeezed his hand. “I am so freaking happy for you. Leo’s an amazing person.”

“Yeah, well, I’m just hoping he’s not secretly a psychopath.”

Hannah swallowed. “Yeah, we’ve had enough of them to last us a lifetime.”

“Miss Jacobs?”

They all looked up to see a doctor stepping into the room.

Brigid rose. “That’s our cue to leave.” She gave Hannah one more hug, and Henry did the same.

When the doctor closed the door after them, her pulse sped up.

“Just tell me,” she whispered.

He nodded. “You’re pregnant. About seven weeks.”

The breath that slipped out of her lungs seemed to leave her in slow motion. Her second confirmation, and still, it didn’t feel real.

The doctor pushed his glasses up his nose. “You may have a good endocrinologist, but you might want to switch to one who specializes in pregnancy. We have one here at the hospital if you’d like a referral. Women with type 1 can have a healthy and safe pregnancy, but it’s important to monitor things like blood pressure, vision, and kidneys.”
