In a crouch, I moved over to Kent's body and pulled out both of the guns he had on him.

Sorry, buddy, I told him silently. He didn't need them anymore and we might.I'm sorry you'll never get to drink cocktails on a beach and fuck beautiful women.

He would have known, going into this, he may not get out of it alive. His death still sucked.

I crawled back over to Lila and pressed one of the guns into her hand. I knew she wouldn't hesitate to use it if she needed to.

"How far are we from the SUV?" she whispered in my ear.

"About ten minutes," I whispered back. Where the fuck were the twins? I had a couple of theories. Some of them weren't good.

Judging by the expression on Lila's face, she was thinking some of the same things. A flash of fear crossed her features, but she shoved it away. Her tough-as-stone mask was back in place.

I wanted to grind my teeth. She was too young to be so hardened. Kent had the right idea. A beach in Tahiti, far away from all of this, would be perfect. If she'd leave, which she wouldn't.

"I'm going to deal with these assholes. Stay down. Keep out of sight." I quickly kissed her mouth.

"I'm coming with you," she said.

"They know we're here," I said before she could argue any further. "Chances are, the third asshole is coming around behind us. I need you to get him before he gets me. Understood?" I needed her to do as I said or we might both be fucked.

She paused with her mouth open, then closed it and nodded. "Consider him dead."

"That's my girl." I nodded my approval and kissed her again before moving away through the bushes.

I stopped to scoop up a rock and threw it as hard as I could in the opposite direction to where Lila lay. It was the oldest trick in the book, but rarely failed to achieve the desired result.

"Over there," one of them said. He started to move towards me.

I did sayrarely, not never. Either way, he stepped in sight, giving me the chance to raise my gun and shoot him squarely in the left side of his chest.

The shot sounded like thunder on acid. It rang loud enough to make me wince.

The other asshole stepped in sight as his companion's body hit the forest floor. I decorated his face with a shot to his temple. He looked much better that way, with blood and brains, and bits of skull going everywhere.

"Don't move, motherfucker." A voice came from the left of me. This time it definitely didn't belong to a friend. "I'll blow your knees off and leave you to die."

I started to turn my head slowly.

"I said don't move," Casper snapped. "On your feet."

Those weren't confusing instructions at all. Pointing that out would result in me being dead, so I held my hands out and slowly rose.

"Drop the gun." He moved closer.

I opened my hand and let the firearm drop clear. "Now what?"

Lila rose from the bushes, took aim and shot Casper three times in the face. "Now he dies."

What was left of Casper hit the ground with a thud.

"Huh, he had more brains than I realised." I exhaled a slow breath and scooped the gun back up. "Nice work."

No one was going to recognise the body. His face was almost completely destroyed.

She was definitely not holding anything back. What is it they say about hell not having as much fury as an angry woman? Lila Bell was not someone to cross.

"No one pulls a gun on my boyfriend." She lowered the one in her hand. "Unless it's me, if you and the twins deserve it." She smiled faintly.
