I tilt my head directing him towards the kitchen. Following him he notices the newspaper right away. Picking it up he reads over what I already can tell is bad news for everyone involved.
“Lucca, what the fuck?” he burst out.
Sighing. “That’s what I needed you here for. I don’t think Charlie had anything do with that. Her body broke down when I accused her, a guilty person doesn’t act like that, Rett.” Rubbing my face with my hands.
“You want me to figure out who leaked this information? That’s going to take a while. Go tend to Charlie. I might have to call Scarlett. She’s going to need a fucking lawyer.”
“So, you believe me then.”
I turn around to find Charlie leaning against the wall, looking pale. I stalk towards her, bringing her into my arms.
“I always did. I had to be one hundred percent sure. I need to sort this out. I need every record of your client. Can you get a hold of Oscar right away, have him come over.”
Her facial features scrunched up. “Lucca, I can’t give you access to my clients. That’s private information, sorry, but I can’t.” She whirls around and leaves.
I go to follow. A hand clamps down on my arm. “Don’t. I can get into her computer and find her files.”
It’s a fucking mad house right now, for someone who never wanted to do work in his house that didn’t last long. Currently, Rett is stationed at the kitchen table typing away on his computer. Nico and Antonino are talking with Oscar trying to figure out what happened. While Charlie is playing upstairs with Ada. I decided it was best to keep her home today. I couldn’t risk anything happening to her at school. Anna is being a godsend with keeping all of us feed, even when I lash out at her on accident. Thankfully, she knows I’m under a huge amount of stress. Father called telling me he can’t get a hold of Vincent. Not that I blame him. I would be screening everyone’s phone calls today. I’m waiting for Scarlett to show up, so we can get legal advice on what to do for Charlie. She’s going to need it.
For how last night went, I wasn’t expecting for today to turn into this. Of course, Father blamed Charlie without listening to me. What does she have to gain from any of this. Fucking nothing that’s what. My guess is whoever is after me, figured out that Charlie is with me. She’s nothing but a target now.
“I think I found something in her files.” Rett calls out.
We all sit at the table waiting for him to explain. This better be good. I have built up rage that needs to be executed on somebody.
“This guy right here. His entire file looks fishy to me. He randomly showed up a couple of weeks ago looking for an accountant. His business doesn’t even exist. Did Charlie not look into him?” He looks up at me. I shrug. “Call her down.”
I holler for her, while Rett explains more on this guy. If he finds him evasive, then he must be.
“Yeah, what is it?” she asked when she enters the kitchen.
I pull her onto my lap. “Rett found something, and we need to ask you a few questions.”
“Who is this guy?” He rotates the laptop pointing to the name. Both her and Oscar freeze. That speaks for itself.
“That’s Colin, or so he says that’s his name. My dad ran his name through the system, and it came back with nothing. It’s fake. All that is fake. He doesn’t exist. He gave Oscar and I the creeps,” she trailed off.
“What is it?”
“Charlie,” Oscar mumbles, “The fucking finger.”
“What fucking finger?” I shouted.
Charlie ducked her head, Oscar winced. “She had a severed finger delivered a while ago.”
My jaw tightens. “Before or after this Colin guy visited?”
“It was the same day that we had our lunch. Colin scheduled an appointment, then I had a packaged delivered to me. Oh, God.” She brings her hand to her mouth.
Antonio looks at Rett, a silent conversation passing between them. Nico comes behind Charlie rubbing her shoulders.
“Everything will be okay, Charlie; we all have your back.” She pats his hand that’s resting on her shoulder giving him a small smile.
I reach for her hand bringing it up to my lips. A single tear falls. I pull her in for a hug. “It’s okay baby, I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.”
“What does he want with me? I didn’t do anything to him. I don’t even know who he is.” She cries harder into my shirt.
That’s what I need to figure out. Knowing Tony and Rett they’ll hack into the cameras at her work trying to find him on there, hoping we can uncover what he looks like. Unfortunately, they‘re the only ones that can point him out. Oscar finally gets his wish about cashing in on our favour. We need him now more than anything. When I can’t be with her, he’ll have to be. I trust him. I feel certain she does.
