His eyes widen. “The hell? Since when do we talk like that?”
“Since you called me while I was having lunch with someone, I haven’t seen in eight years, that’s when. What do you have?”
“Wow. It’s like that is it boss,” he hisses. “Fine. I have a new client for you. They want to schedule a meeting with you for tomorrow at one.”
That’s good. I love working with new people. Plus, my first client of my own since starting, this is great.
“Perfect, set it up. Who is it?”
“Colin Thompson. He recently started a business and would like to meet with an accountant and luckily for you, you’re available for new clients.”
I nod along with him. All true things. “When do the big bosses get back? I have yet to meet them.”
“Mmm, they don’t actually do anything here. It’s more of a status thing for them, that’s why I’m surprised they hired you, if I’m being honest.”
“I had a recommendation from my old boss, that’s probably why. I didn’t even have an interview, really. It was a phone call, and I was pretty much hired. It’s all kind of weird now that I think about it.”
“Strange really.” He stares at me.
Fuck, now I’m getting nervous. Did I make the right choice? It has to be a good place to work if Oscar was still here.
A knock on the door as me and Oscar looking at each other. I shrug. We normally don’t have visitors. He opens it and it’s Jill.
“I have a delivery for you, Charlotte.” She hands Oscar a shoe size box and closes the door behind her.
“Who would be sending you a package?”
The only person I can think of is Lucca, but I just seen him, so that doesn’t add up. Oscar sets the box on my desk. I don’t see a note, so when I take the lid off, I instantly drop it and I stumble backwards, covering my mouth. I can’t get far enough away. Bile rises in my thought, and I swallow it back down.
“Chuck, what’s wrong. Are you okay?” His hands cup my face. “Look at me, breath in, breath out. That’s it.” I do what he says.
“T-there’s a severed finger in that box.” I point towards my desk.
He looks at it, then at me. “Should I use my contact?”
I shake my head. “Whoever sent this meant it as a warning. I have a feeling I know who’s it for.”
“What the hell are you messed up in already Chuck?”
That’s what I would like to know. I’ve only moved back, I haven’t stepped on anyone’s toes yet. I don’t want to alarm Dad and I can’t tell Scarlett she’ll tell her brother.
I’ll have to be more careful for now on.
“What should we do with this? We can’t throw it in the garbage.”
“Place it in your freezer. You never know when you’ll need it.”
I blanch at that. He does have a point. I might need to show someone this soon.
Meeting with Charlie yesterday made me bring up feelings. I thought I had no more. Me being the selfish man I am; I want her more than anything. Hence why the invitation to supper. I needed more of her. I also still needed to explain more letting her decide if she wants more, not that I’ll give her a choice. I don’t think I can anymore. I wasn’t lying when I said I didn’t love Bianca, I’ve only ever loved Charlie and it was with that love that I had to let her go. I needed her to experience life before she got sucked up into this shit storm. I belonged too. I couldn’t do that to her amongst other things. I know she hates me for marrying and having a child with someone else, I read it all over her face. It’s the life she wanted with me, and I gave it to someone else. Not that I had a choice. We don’t get many choices in this world, but she’s one that I would give anything up for.
After I lay Ada down to bed, I set off to the office. We have our big supplier delivering to us around midnight, and I need to establish a couple of things beforehand.
I’m not going to lie; I get nervous every time it’s delivery day. Something can always go wrong, no matter all the planning you do. My decoy is set waiting for the cops to rain down on them. Worth every penny to keep people in your pocket.
The guys and I strap our gear on and head to the warehouse. Most of my soldiers are walking around the property checking the weak spots. They know how this night will go down. Nothing can go wrong; I can’t afford a failure.
I check my watch to make sure everyone is running on schedule; twenty more minutes and it’s show time. I have checkpoints set up throughout the route monitoring the van. Nico has been sending me updates each time the driver passes one.
