“How are you two doing?” She asks, kneeling down and giving Maisey a hug. She reserved her smile for my daughter, which is just fine with me. Though I can’t help noticing her figure. She fills out a pair of jeans very well.

The two of them have a conversation and it is adorable to see Maisey so happy,

I stand there awkwardly for a moment, taking in my daughter and her nanny.

Just about the time I begin to say we should be going, the three of us are suddenly swarmed by photographers and reporters. Flash bulbs are going off and everyone is asking their question at the same time.

“Why did you and Nicoli Petrovich breakup?”

“Is it true you abused her and that’s why she dumped you?”

“Where did Nicoli get the bruises on her arms?”

The noise, the flashing lights, and the jostling scare Maisey and she begins crying hard as she starts calling my name. The next thing I see is Cam, picking up Maisey and running away from the pandemonium. I follow in quick pursuit. We manage to get down a hallway before the reporters can see us and find a janitor's closet that’s unlocked. Cam ducks in there with Maisey and I shut the door and lock it from the inside.

Cam and I have a stare off and I wonder how I’m going to explain this situation.

Chapter 5 - Camdyn Schriefer

“Whew. That was insane. Are you alright?” I nod my head as I set Maisey down, who is still crying. Parker and I both sit on the floor and bring Maisey down in between us and try to calm her down. Her cries, turn to sniffles and then hiccups. While Parker pats his pockets for tissue, I have already wiped Maisey’s nose and snuggled her in close. I nod and lean my head back.

“Are you okay?” I ask Maisey.

She snuggles closer to me but stays silent. My heart breaks for the little girl.

Taking a few deep breaths, I stare up at the ceiling. Trying to understand the chaos that just happened. We were bombarded by the paparazzi.

Was Parker that famous?

“Sorry about all of that. I know the lights and cameras can be a lot,” Parker said. “This does not usually happen and I feel awful for both of you for having to deal with all of that.

I kept staring at the ceiling but nodded.

“I hope you know that I never touched Nicoli. I’m not that type of man. I don’t go around hitting women.” I turn my head to look at Parker, brows furrowed. Remembering how he treated me, I’m actually not surprised at the allegation.

He is staring straight ahead. Parker fills the silence.

“I met Nicoli a year ago. I wasn’t even sure I was ready to date then but she was beautiful, and intelligent and could make me laugh. I hadn’t laughed a whole lot since my wife passed from cancer four years ago.”

I saw Parker glance at me to see if I was still listening.

A nod assured him I was. I am not sure what exactly he is expecting me to think but I am unsure of how to feel.

“Anyway, we dated for about a year, when I caught her cheating on me. We had a date that night and I arrived at her place a bit early. I wanted to surprise her with flowers. I let myself into her loft and walked down the hall, calling her name. When I opened her bedroom door, there were her breasts, jostling about while some prick was doing her from behind. I threw the flowers in her face and stormed out leaving her key on the counter. That was the last I saw of her,” His voice sounds full of bitterness and sadness.

I made a sound to let him know I heard what he said.

“Please believe me, Cam. That woman is a money-hungry, backstabbing, cheating cow. She only wanted my money. She didn’t love me, she didn’t love Maisey. In fact, Maisey was an inconvenience to her.” He pauses. “Several times she showed up, threatening me if I didn’t give her a million dollars. I refused. When she left, I thought that would be the last I heard from her, until the media swarmed us just now.”

“I believe you, though, I remember what a jerk you could be growing up.” I still at the confession and look over to see if he had heard it.

Parker’s eyes grow wide in realization of what I just said. I could kick myself right now. What a moron I am.

“You know who I really am?” Parker asks accusingly as he glares at me.

I nod slowly, trying to understand why this is such a big deal.

What did it matter that I knew who he was? It did not change much between us.
