“What the fuck is going on?” Diego asked.

“My guess is FBI, here for her,” Tracer said. He needed to play this carefully and make sure Chloe got out of it alive.

“So what do we do?”

“First. Don’t kill her. She’s our leverage. Got it?”

Diego nodded.

The bedroom door burst open. Dawson stood there, gun raised and aimed at Tracer’s head. Tyler Mason was next to him, gun aimed at Diego. Diego pulled Chloe in front of him, putting the barrel of his gun at her temple.

“Don’t do it,” Dawson said. “Nobody has to die here. Hand her over.”

“No.” Diego spat.

“Tell your man to stand down,” Dawson said, looking Tracer in the eye.

“You let us walk out of here and you can have-—”

Tracer didn’t finish. The lights went out, all of them plunged into darkness. Two shots rang out amid a piercing scream.

RYAN MOVED SOPHIE CAREFULLY so he could get up and answer his phone. They had ended up laying on the couch together, and Sophie had drifted back off to sleep.

Moving to the kitchen, he answered.

“We got her,” Dex said.

“Is she OK?”

“She took a bullet in the shoulder. Sam cleared it to bring her to Westside.”

“Fuck, how bad?” Ryan dragged a hand over his face.

“Tyler said she’ll be fine, but she needs surgery.”

“And the others?”

“Perez and Vitelli weren’t there. Juan and Diego are dead.”

“And Tracer?”

After a long pause Dex spoke again. “Let’s talk about that one when I see you. Sam said you can bring Sophie to Westside. Then he wants you on the debrief.”

“Dex? You good?” He sounded pissed, but Dex had ended the call.

Sophie got up off the couch, looking worried.

“They got her,” he said walking toward her.

For a few seconds, she didn’t speak.

“Honey, did you hear me?”

“Yes, oh, God. Are you sure? I mean, do you really have her? Is she OK? Is she hurt? Where is she? I want to see her.”

“Woah! Slow down. Take a breath. Chloe is at the hospital—”

“How bad is she hurt?” Sophie interrupted him, her face tight with worry.
