“Try telling her that.” Ryan sighed.
Sam’s voice came back on the line. “Local PD are on their way with CSU. But I just spoke with Sanchez. He's arranging for two agents to meet you there. It’s not really their jurisdiction, but because of who she is, Sanchez is doing us a favor. At least until we know more.”
Ryan let out a breath of relief. “Thanks, Sam. I appreciate it.” Dale Sanchez was a special agent with the FBI in LA. Onyx had worked with him before, and he and Sam were old friends. Something he was extremely grateful for right now.
“I’ll have Kelly keep working on the phone. Keep us posted.”
“I will.” Ryan rang off, stepping backing outside into the hall. Sophie was leaning against the wall with her eyes closed, crying softy. Silently, he hugged her into his side, holding her, until the sound of sirens broke the quiet.
“Police?” Sophie looked at him.
“Yes, with the crime scene unit. But there are two FBI agents on their way. They’re going to lead the investigation.”
“FBI? Dex arranged that?”
He would love to be able to tell her exactly who they were, how Onyx worked with different agencies, but Sam would lose his shit. Considering what he’d just done for him, now was not the time to piss him off.
“Like I said, we have some connections.”
“Thank you for being here and helping.”
“You don’t need to thank me. Let’s go meet the police.”
Ryan gave the police the rundown on how they came to be here. CSU began collecting evidence, dusting for prints, bagging hair, anything and everything that might give them a lead.
“Ryan Baxter?” Ryan turned at the female voice.
“Yes.”
“I’m Agent Jessica Adams and this is my partner Agent Carlos Lopez.” Agent Adams gestured to the man beside her. Ryan shook both their hands.
“Thank you for coming. This is Dr. Sophie Summers, Chloe’s sister.”
Agent Adams spoke to Sophie. “Dr. Summers, you have my word that we will do everything we can to find your sister.”
Sophie nodded.
“Agent Lopez and I will just take a quick look around the apartment then, if it’s OK with both of you, we’ll head back to our office.”
Sophie looked to him for guidance.
“Of course,” he replied, squeezing Sophie’s hand.
They waited as the agents walked through the apartment, asking the CSU guys some questions. One of them gave Agent Adams a bag containing the phone. Ryan listened as she approached a uniformed officer.
“I want officers going door to door, see if anyone heard or saw anything. Also, I spotted cameras outside the main door. Get the footage. All findings and reports are to come straight to me.” She handed the officer a card.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Ryan gave Sophie a small smile. “These guys know what they’re doing. We got the best looking for her now.”
“OK, let’s get out of here. Do you have a car?” Agent Adams asked.
“Yes, I’ll follow you.”
“Good. Let’s get going.”
