She nodded. He stepped back to grab his phone off the kitchen counter. Sophie didn’t move as he appeared to send a reply, but when he looked up, his face was tense.
“What is it?” she asked nervously.
“I have to rejoin the team. They’re waiting for me.”
“Oh. Does that mean I’m out of danger?” Disappointment flooded her. She should be happy she was out of danger, but it meant Ryan was leaving.
He moved back between her legs, this time taking her hands in his.
“Yes. Ricardo is in Mexico. He’s being watched.”
“And that’s why you have to go? Because I don’t need protection anymore?” She bit her lip, suddenly emotional.
“We have an op.”
Try as she might, she couldn’t stop the tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Hey. Don’t be upset. I’ll be back. And we will pick up exactly where we left off.” He stroked her hair.
“Sorry, I guess I have to get used to this. It’s just new to me.”
“I know. Try not to worry. I have more reason to come home in one piece than I ever have before.” A small smile played on his lips.
She slapped his chest. “Don’t joke. It’s not funny.”
“I’m not joking, babe. There is nothing I won’t do to come home to you.” He kissed her nose. “I have to get going.”
“When will I see you?”
“I don’t know. I’ll call you as soon as I can.”
Sophie quickly slipped on her clothes and walked with him to the door. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her thoroughly.
“Where’s your phone?” he asked. She rummaged in her purse hanging from the banister and handed it to him.
“What are you doing?”
“You already have Kelly’s number, but if you can’t reach her and you need anything. Or you’re worried. Anything. Call this number.” He showed her the phone and the new contact he entered under “Sam.”
“Your boss?”
“Yes. Don’t hesitate to call him or Kelly.”
She nodded. “OK.”
They stood staring at each other. She wanted to tell him she loved him. How he made her feel. How scared she was he was leaving. But she didn’t.
Ryan opened the door. “Maybe you should stay at my place. My security is better.”
“I’m fine here. You just said Ricardo’s in Mexico, and I’ll be on base at Westside most of the time.”
“Alright. Lock this behind me. When I get back, we’re putting an alarm and cameras in.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes. Humor me. It will make me feel better when I’m gone.”
Sophie smiled. It felt good to have someone worry about her safety. “Whatever you say, oh master.”
