“That’s all that was in the apartment,” Ryan said.
“Considering the wording, I'd say these are the last two,” Sam added. “FBI have the laptop and phone. The agent in charge will work with us, joint task force. If they find anything, they’ll pass it along.”
“Hopefully that leads us to who’s behind this, because that kid was working for someone.” Dex sighed.
“Er, Dex, your arm,” Kelly said. Dex glanced at it, seeing the blood oozing from the bandage.
“Shit, I must have caught it when I climbed out the window.”
“Go get it checked it out,” Sam said.
“It’s OK. Tyler can clean it up.”
“Dawson, Westside is five minutes away. Go get it checked out.”
Dex held up his hands. “Alright. I’m going.” He moved toward Kelly, rolling his eyes, and she gave him a small smile. “How are you doing?”
“I’m good. Really.”
He leaned down, giving her a gentle kiss on the lips, not caring who was watching.
“I’ll be right back, beautiful.”
“I APPRECIATE THE COMPANY, but I’m quite capable of doing this myself.” Dex and Ryan strolled towards the hospital.
“I’m just watching your six, my friend. You do have a huge target on your back.”
Dex glanced at Ryan; something was going on here.
“You’re taking this whole Rashid thing well.” Ryan said.
Dex shrugged. “He’s dead, won’t be leaving any more threats. If that brings whoever is behind this out into the open, bring it on. I’m ready.”
They pushed through the front doors of Westside and headed for reception.
“Dexter?” He turned at the familiar voice.
“Sophie, good to see you.” A genuine smile warmed his face.
“You too.” Her eyes darted to Ryan, standing next to him.
“Oh, you remember Ryan, right?”
“Yes, of course.” She smiled at Ryan, color rising in her cheeks.
“Doctor Summers.” Ryan smiled, locking his eyes on hers.
Dex watched the exchange trying to keep the smirk off his face. So, this was why Ryan wanted to come along.
Sophie turned her attention back to Dex. “I spoke with Kelly yesterday. I’m glad you’re there for her.”
“Yeah, we’re working it out.” Except this morning, when he’d fucked it right up. “She’s told me frequently how much you helped her, so thank you for bringing her back to me.”
Sophie smiled. “Oh, I think Ryan had a quite a big part in that too.” Her eyes moved back to Ryan, who stood with his arms folded, wearing a lazy smile.
“Oh please, you flatter me. You did all the hard work.”
Dex was now thoroughly amused at whatever this was that was going on in front of him. The usually very cool, professional Doctor Summers was clearly flustered, and his dear friend Ryan was very much enjoying it.
