He gives a nod before quickly looking at me, and I pull my eyes away from his intense stare as I follow Sara to the kitchen.

As soon as she pulls a bottle of wine from the rack and smiles at me, I'm hesitant to drink while I'm working.

“Oh, I'm not sure if Arlo would like it if—"

Her brows furrow as she observes me.

“He won't mind at all, Wren! He's fine with Cree, and we'll only have one.”

I give her an awkward smile and watch as she pours each of us a large glass.

“This is the first drink I've had in nine long months!”

When she passes me a glass, we clink our glasses in celebration before taking a sip. We take a seat beside each other at the kitchen island, and before I say anything, I take a big gulp to settle my nerves.

“So, how was the birth?”

She shrugs her shoulders as she sets her glass down.

“Painful.”

We both laugh, and then my expression falls with seriousness and concern before I ask her what I've been meaning to ask.

“Sara, while we're alone, I wanted to ask you something.”

She glances at me, confusion falling over her pretty features.

“What is it?”

“Well, Arlo had some friends over for poker night, and I joined them, but there were a couple of girls there.”

“Who?”

“Some chick named Savannah, and—”

She rolls her eyes with a growl before picking up her wine glass again.

“I'm not sure why Arlo hangs out with that bitch; she's nothing but trouble.”

“Well, she said something that bothered me.”

She takes a sip of her wine before nodding for me to continue.

“She said Cree's mom was murdered.”

She suddenly shifts uncomfortably in her seat, losing eye contact, and I lean in to whisper gently.

“So, is it true?”

Her gaze swiftly meets mine before she responds with a gentle nod.

“I suppose you were bound to find out sooner or later, but yes, she was murdered.”

I can't stop my eyes from widening when it's confirmed.

“How? I'm confused. This is devastating.”

She sighs again before setting her glass on the counter.
