"Did you go and see the trains?"

My eyes flick up to meet hers.

"We did."

She stares at me carefully for a moment before speaking again.

"And Wren?"

I sigh before breaking eye contact.

"And Wren..."

"Mom said before you walked in that she was there this morning, so I take it you gave her the job and she's moved in already?"

I remain silent, but I hear her exhale a tense breath.

"Be nice to her, Arlo. She is only there to do her job, and she's great with Cree."

I raise my eyes to hers and squint slightly, becoming agitated quickly.

"Don't you think I know that?"

I offer the baby back to her, and she accepts her with an uneasy look before I speak sternly to her.

"Let's talk about why Lloyd didn't show the fuck up to his first child's birth."

My mom quickly snaps at me.

"Arlo, it's hardly the time!"

I narrow my hard gaze on my mom while Sara speaks.

"I told him, but he didn't show up. I didn't expect anything different; after all, we're going through a divorce.”

My focus darts to Sara instantly and I grit my teeth.

"Divorce or no fucking divorce, he should have been here! It's not the baby's fault that you're not working!"

She glares at me, clearly feeling enraged by my tone of voice.

"What did you expect, Arlo? You know the type of man he is. I've learned not to get my hopes up with that pig."

I raise my voice, becoming even more annoyed.

"I'll break his fucking legs and peel the skin from his body!"

My mom suddenly yells.

"Enough with you two!"

My furious glare quickly met hers.

"And where the fuck is Dad?"

When I mention him, she immediately tenses up before she stutters.

"He's... working."
