“Not exactly, Cree. Your mommy will always be your mommy, but Wren will always love, protect, and look after you.”
“Like a mommy would?”
I swallow the lump in my throat as Cree gazes up at Arlo, and Arlo takes a moment, clearly thinking about putting it into words, before he responds.
“Like a mommy would.”
Cree smiles and then quickly looks at me.
“Wren, my mommy is an angel; did you know that?”
As his big eyes glisten with excitement, I feel like I might bawl my eyes out, but I remain strong and give him a nod with a smile.
“And what a beautiful angel she is.”
I see his little mind thinking through his eyes before gazing up at Arlo again.
“I love Wren too, though, Daddy. Can we both love her?”
I felt my heart pull out of my chest when he said that and I cleared my throat as a tear fell down my cheek and I quickly wipe it away.
Arlo smiles widely and lets out a small laugh before he speaks.
“I’m not sure, but maybe we can ask her if she can deal with the both of us, shall we?”
They both look at me now and my watery eyes flick between the both of them before I smile as I respond.
“Always! I love you both so much and there's more than enough for both of you.”
Arlo raises an eyebrow.
“Enough for the three of us?”
As soon as he says that, Cree looks up at him. Arlo looks at Cree and he has a small smile on his lips as he speaks to him.
“We’re having a baby, Cree. You’re going to be a big brother.”
I observe as Cree’s eyes become bigger and he quickly looks at me as Arlo continues.
“How do you feel about that?”
Cree’s gaze moves down to my belly and his face has confusion on it as he speaks.
“She doesn’t look like she has a baby in her.”
I roll my lips inward with a smile and look down at myself before speaking.
“Tell me that in a couple of months.”
When Arlo talks, I lift my head and look at him.
“The baby will grow, Cree. It is just very small right now, but the bigger it grows, the bigger Wren’s belly will get.”
Cree’s eyes meet Arlo’s now as he speaks.
“Like Aunt Sara?”
Arlo nods.
