"He's my fucking son. I say who the fuck is right for him."

"But..."

He suddenly cuts her off by raising his beastly voice.

"I don't fucking want her here; do I make myself clear?"

His harsh tone causes me to straighten up from the shiver crawling up my spine and I face away, but Sara continues her protest.

"Just be around Friday when she plans to come back for Cree to take him to see the trains, and you'll see her with him, and you can witness for yourself what I see. I've never seen him so happy and content with a nanny before! I promise you. Arlo, she's the one!"

The silence becomes uncomfortable again while I keep my head down, but when I peer up, they are just staring at one another.

I notice his sharp jaw muscles tense as he bites down on his teeth, and then his dark eyes quickly dart to mine.

"Friday."

He then switches his focus sharply to Sara.

"If I don't see what you see, she's gone."

I'm not sure whether I should be relieved that I might be employed or to be annoyed by this arrogant, beautiful asshole, but Sara seems thrilled as she smiles broadly and drapes her arm around my shoulder.

Arlo and I hold intense eye contact as she leads me towards the front door, and he stays in the same spot, watching closely as Sara leans in and whispers to me.

"I'm sorry about him. I'm sure he'll notice what I see when he sees you and Cree together. He's just somewhat overly protective, you know?"

As we come to a halt at the door, I give her a slight, uncertain nod, and she takes her arm off my shoulder and continues.

"Please return; Cree will be devastated if you don't."

I inhale a long breath and return my eyes to Arlo, who is staring carefully from a distance, his hands deep in his pockets, looking intimidating as hell.

As Sara opens the door in front of me, I pull my gaze away from him, and we walk out together.

The chilly night air hits me as we leave the house, and I shiver. As Sara walks alongside me towards my car, I notice a matte blackLamborghiniparked behind myBMW.

"May I ask what Mr Hayes does for a living? He seems incredibly young to be living such a luxurious lifestyle."

As we approach my car, I turn to face her, and I notice she avoids eye contact before finally responding.

"He is a financial entrepreneur."

I give a slight nod as we stop and I reach out to open the door, then slide onto my seat before looking her way.

"So, Friday?"

She flashes me a smile.

"Yes, is 10 a.m. okay?"

As I respond, I tighten my seatbelt over me and clip it in.

"Perfect! I'll see you soon."

Once I've closed the door, we wave at each other through the window, but I sit there for a bit, buried in my own thoughts about how the day has gone. Like, how did an amazing, productive day turn into a shitty one in a matter of minutes?

Cree is such a sweetheart, and I can easily see myself looking after him full-time, but his dad? I hope I don't have to see him all the time, but that's probably unlikely since he lives there.
