I react quietly when my gaze returns to him.
"I do—"
"Then tell me."
"I can't."
"Why the fuck not?"
I groan and glance away once more.
"Please don't do this, Arlo."
When I start to move away from him, he tightens his grip on my hips, driving his fingers into my flesh to stop me.
"You're notgoing anywhere until you tell me, Wren."
I swallow the lump in my throat as my eyes well up, and I really want to tell him, but I'm afraid of how he'll react. Will he go crazy and blow up the whole thing, putting my sister in more danger because of his rage and temper?
As we stare at each other, he waits for me to tell him.
"If we have to, we can wait here all fucking day."
Before I say anything, I sniffle.
"I'm worried about how you'll react."
"You're fucking pregnant?"
He really caught me off guard with how bluntly he said that, causing me to straighten up and pinch my brows as I respond.
"What? No."
"You're seeing someone else?"
"No way, Arlo! What the hell?"
"Well, what the fuck is it?"
I sigh, knowing I'll never win this battle with Arlo since he's stubborn and will prod me until I tell him the truth.
After a while of silence, I finally just let it out.
"On the day I left, someone came to see me at your house."
His brows furrow in confusion and he elevates his chin while examining me carefully.
"What the fuck are you talking about?"
"Promise me you won't react badly until we figure this out."
He pauses, hesitation written in his dark eyes and his jaw clenched, but when he reluctantly nods, I speak.
"Your dad."
I watch the fury flash through his eyes as he begins to rise and my heart pounds in my chest as panic grips me, but I attempt to push him back down.
"No! You promised me!"
