“Yup,” Kyle said, kissing her forehead and giving me the time to be with Ellen.

“You scared me, baby,” I said, taking her mouth in a sweet kiss.

“I know, and I'll try to stop doing that. Edric, am I safe here?”

“Why would you ask that?”

“Because someone tried to kill me once already, and I'm afraid they may try again.”

“I don't want you to think about that, you hear me? This entire hospital is under surveillance.” I was about to continue when Ellen's door opened, and before I could turn around to see who it was, I noticed the change in Ellen's expression. She was afraid and quickly closed her eyes to make it appear she was sleeping. I covered every inch of her with the blanket and faced the same asshole I threw through a plate glass door a few days ago.

“What the fuck do you want?” I didn’t hold back my anger aimed at the guard.

He raised his arms and said, “I don’t want to cause any trouble. I bring flowers for Dr. Cara Ellen,” He bounced from one foot to another. He looked nervous when he realized shewasn’t alone. What did he want with my woman? And why the fuck is he calling her Cara?

“You can leave the flowers with the nurses and return to work. Oh, and another thing,” he turned to look at me. “Stay out of my way, far from Ellen, or I’ll throw you through another door.” I spat out.

“You have every right to be angry with me for failing to do my job. But, please, sir, I mean no harm. I just wanted to give Dr. Cara Ellen something to make her smile,” he stammered over his words. I was over this guy and shoved him out of Ellen's room, closing the door behind me.

“Her name is Dr. Ellen Chantal, no Cara, so cut the crap. Now, what the fuck do you want? I will not ask again.” I got in his face with his back hitting the counter of the nurse's station. I had multiple sets of eyes on me, but everyone remained silent as I questioned the guard.

“I'm sorry if I overstepped; I just wanted to bring her a get-well gift.”

“And what about Cara? Why do you keep calling her that?”

“Cara means,” I cut him off and stepped closer where the little shit had no room to move.

“I know what the word means; I want to know why you are addressing your boss in that manner. Because that's who she is to you and will be nothing more, do not call her any term of endearment again. Do you hear me, Paolo?”

“Yes, I understand.”

“See that you do; now get the hell out of here,” he placed the flowers on the desk and walked briskly to the elevator, never looking back.

“Ugh, he's creepy; thank you for putting him in his place,” Nai said as she shivered to prove her point.

“How creepy? Has he been bothering Ellen? Or anyone else here at the clinic?”

“Not that I'm aware; he lurks a lot and doesn’t realize we see him doing it. Oh, and on the day her car exploded, she caught him in her office, and she was pretty freaked out by it. He said he was doing a security check, but that's bullshit because her office is always locked, and no one goes in there unless Ellen is there too.”

“Thank you, Nai, you've been a big help. Please keep this between us until I can look into it more.”

“You got it,” and then asked, “You don’t think he had something to do with the explosion? I know he’s weird, but I never would peg him as someone who could hurt any of us, especially Ellen.”

“I promise you that you are all safe, and I will find the person responsible for Ellen’s accident. But, if it turns out to be Paolo, let’s just say it will not end well for him.” I said nothing more and returned to Ellen's room to see her sitting up and waiting for me.

“Hey, you alright?” I sat down on the bed and held her hands in mine. She was visibly upset, and now I knew why. “Baby, are you afraid of the security guy? Has he done something to hurt you in any way?”

“Edric, I want to go home,” she began to shake.

“Hey, I'm here, and no one will hurt you. What happened the other day will not happen again. I promise you, so please tell me why you are so scared?”

She wouldn't stop shaking, which was beginning to freak me out. I almost paged Kyle back to her room to give her something to calm down, but she did it on her own when I pulled her closer.

I told her over and over again that it was going to be alright and she was safe. Every word I said calmed her a little more, and then I asked her again, “Why are you scared? You need to tell me, baby,” Her fingernails were biting into my skin, but I didn't care if it made her feel better.

She inhaled deeply and said, “Paolo, I think he's the one who tried to kill me.”
