I had to do something for Bourne, a special request for his wedding present to Sabina. So, I remained behind while he and Sabina returned to New Zealand to prepare for their nuptials. Ellen kept me at arm’s length the entire time I was in Italy, but I was slowly gaining momentum, and I was beginning to chip away at the invisible barrier she had up between us. Finally, a few days later, I picked her up to take us to the private hangar, where the jet waited to take us to the island. Once seated in the Range Rover I was driving, I turned to Ellen and cupped her face. “Can I see you again?” I asked.
Her eyes danced with amusement as she answered, “You’re seeing me right now,”
“Smart-ass,” I whispered and took a kiss without asking. “Yes, but I want more than coffee and wedding dates. I want to take you anywhere you wish to go that involves anything you want to do. I want everything with you.” She sighed, disappointing me because it was not the reaction I wanted.
“Edric, I’d like that more than I can ever explain, but I’m saying no.”
“Please reconsider; I know you want me as much as I want you. Come on, Ellen, what are you waiting for?”
“Nothing,” she said, snapping at me. “It’s not you; it’s me and the building behind us. In there is where I belong. It’s my life. Whenever I try to have a personal one, it never works out, and someone always gets hurt, and that someone is me. No man has ever wanted to compete and fight for my attention regarding mycareer. So, I’m sorry, and I’ll understand if you don’t want me to join you for the wedding.”
I sighed and was relieved, knowing I still had a shot and would take it. We have something between us, and it’s worth exploring no matter how often I have to come back here to romance the stubborn doctor. I pulled her onto my lap and took a chance that she wouldn’t fight or resist my touch. She felt incredible against me as I took her mouth in a fiery kiss. She moaned, and I kissed her more until I broke free just enough to say, “Give me a chance to change your mind, please. Come on, Ellen, don’t leave me alone in this, not when I know you feel something for me, too?”
She sighed and put her head down to my chest, which I fucking loved and craved more. “I want to, Edric, but I don’t see how it can work. We live in different countries, and doing long-distance would be difficult.”
“We live under a thousand miles between us and approximately three hours by plane, so I don’t see a problem. We can make this work because I can’t imagine leaving and not seeing you again. I want you, Ellen, and if it hasn’t been painfully obvious to you, then let me rectify it the minute we are on my plane. We will give new meaning to the mile-high club,” I winked, and then she laughed, giving me hope.
“How far to the airport?” she asked.
“I drive fast, so buckle up,” She gave me the hottest kiss of my life and did as I asked. Her kiss alone would forever connect us, but it wasn’t enough, and I wanted more. I’ve never come close to experiencing anything like this before, and I never wanted it until meeting Ellen. I look at Bourne and see how far he’s come with Sabina and where they are now. He makes it look easy, giving me hope to have the same. I’ve never taken a chance on love, but I am now. She’s worth it, and every fiber of my being tells me not to give up.
CHAPTER ONE
Edric
“Edric, excuse the interruption,” she said.
“Yes, what is it?” I asked as my fingers banged on the keyboard, finishing up a report. I was beyond the point of my patience running out waiting for my woman to call, but if this is Ellen, then all my earlier frustrations are now a mere memory.
“I know you didn’t want to be disturbed, but I think you may want to take the call coming in on your private line,” Kaz says through the intercom with a hint of amusement in her voice.
“Thank you,” I reply and slowly inhale and exhale a long breath. This is the call I've been waiting for. We’ve played phone tag since I met the beautiful doctor in Italy. When our schedules allow, we have had the most fantastic weekends, and I can’t help but want more. The circumstances were unfortunate when we met, but I soon discovered she was someone I wanted to get to know better and was thrilled when she accepted my invitation to Bourne and Sabina’s wedding.
I am lucky that the two women have grown quite close, as Bourne is my best mate. It’s perfect. Ellen is wonderful, and I don’t know any other way to describe her. I’ve been counting down the days until we would see each other again, which brings me back to the call I’ve been waiting for. I placed my hand over my heart to calm my rapid heartbeat. I've never felt this way about a woman, but she is like no one I've ever met.
“Hello, this is George,” I answered.
“Ahh, Mr. George, so formal,” she says, and I hear her snicker over the line.
“Well, how did I know I wasn't answering a critical call from a client? One can never be too careful until being sure.” I replied and then glanced down at my tenting erection in my pants.Damn! This woman. She does this to me, and it’s as simple as voicing a few words from her delectable and sweet mouth.
“Touché, but since I'm not a client, you can drop the formalities, Edric,” she enunciated slowly in the sexy tone she uses when we are together.
“So, beautiful, are you saying your call will not pleasure me?” There was a pause on the line, and I felt a twinge of pain in my stomach. I was only kidding like usual on our calls, but now the mood has grown cold.
“What is it, Ellen?” I asked, trying in vain not to react until I heard what she would say.
“I'm sorry, but I have to cancel our weekend. It's work, and something has come up that requires my attention.”What about my attention?I thought and made a sound of frustration.
“Ellen, this is the second time you are bailing on me. What's going on?”
“I just told you what is happening, and it's nothing more than work. So I would hope you will understand.”
“Not when it comes to you,” I bit back.
“What does that mean?” she countered.
“You know exactly what it means, and if I have to explain it again, you weren't paying attention the first time I said it. I'm all in and don't enjoy being jerked around, especially by someone I've given my time to. So, you must be honest and tell me why you are not showing up for our weekend.” I practically shouted into my cell phone, but she didn't back down for one second, which excited me more. I loved how she challenged me, and when the tone of her accent changed, it excited me more.
