Emilia tried to picture her closet. She had a pair of black pumps. Her gray shoes weren’t very fancy.

“What size are you?” Misha asked.

“Seven, maybe seven and a half.”

“Great. Then I’ve probably got something you can borrow. Can you swing by next week?”

Emilia hesitated. She occasionally borrowed Paris’s shoes. But she and Misha weren’t exactly close friends. Maggie was what bound them together.

“I’ll text you my address,” Misha continued. “Maybe after work on Monday?”

“Whatever works for you. I’m flexible. It doesn’t have to be after office hours.” A huge perk of working for herself was that Emilia could set her own schedule.

“Even better.” Misha sounded happy. “Say two o’clock?”

“Sure. I can do that.”

“Great. See you then! Bye, Emilia.”

“Bye.” Emilia ended the call.

“All done?” Nick appeared from behind her.

“All done.” She handed back his phone. “Do you know why she calledyou?”

“It was about missing Kaitlin last night,” he said easily. “Chase is back with the bagels.”

“I’m curious why she didn’t just callme.” They stepped back into the kitchen.

“Maybe it’s because I talked to her last night.”

“You did? When?”

“While you were busy dancing with Sammy. She knows I invested in k!smet right out of the gate.”

Emilia was surprised to hear that. Although, when she thought about it, it did make sense. Nick seemed to be running a successful software company. Why wouldn’t he want to invest in what was looking more and more like a highly lucrative app?

“Everything bagel for Emilia,” Chase said, setting them out on small plates. “Got a serrated knife?”

“Drawer at the far end,” Paris answered as she put on another pot of coffee. “Cream cheese in the fridge.”

“We also have blueberry, plain and asiago,” Chase said as he hunted for the knife.

“So, she was schmoozing you,” Emilia said to Nick.

“She’s a smart businesswoman.”

“You’ve got that right.” It occurred to Emilia that she might want to get in on the k!smet action. It would be the first time she invested in a company instead of consulting for one. But who didn’t appreciate passive income?

It was too bad that, unlike Nick, she hadn’t thought of it on Friday morning when k!smet was first listed on the market.

Nico found his sister in a meeting room at k!smet HQ, walking in as some others filed out, leaving Misha alone at the oblong table.

She looked up with a guilty grin. “Sounds like I almost blew your cover with my phone call.”

“Emilia saw your name come up on the screen, so I had to roll with it.”

“Oops.” Misha came to her feet, tucking her tablet under her arm. “I thought I recovered well about missing the interview.”
