I smiled wryly, my fingers trailing from her chin down the column of her neck.

“I didn’t go back to sleep that morning,” I whispered, leaning in to breathe the words against her hair as my fingers traveled over her collarbone.

She let out a shuddering breath, her eyes closing as I ran my hand down her arm, then up again with the gentlest of touches.

Every downy hair on her body stood on end under my touch, and I reveled in the way her body responded to it.

“I didn’t go to sleep the night after you so brazenly kissed me either, Miss Raylan.”

“It wasn’t brazen,” she said with a choked laugh. “It was a peck.”

“Are you saying you can do better? Because I’m not convinced.”

She opened her eyes and looked up at me, the spark having returned.

This was either going to be a fight, or I was going to get what I wanted and hadn’t stopped thinking about since the day she tore down my road and into my driveway.

“I can do better.”

I took a step forward, effectively pinning her against my desk. I pressed my hands down on the desk on either side of her. She let out her breath in a gentle moan as I leaned in to brush a kiss over her neck, inhaling her scent.

She smelled like wildflowers, clean and sweet and everything I loved about being out in the pasture. She smelled like fuckinghome.

Her arms wrapped around my neck as I picked her up and set her on the desk. I closed my eyes, our foreheads pressed together as I ran my hands over her back. My heart was racing when I opened my eyes again, looking deep into hers.

God, if we did this now… there was no going back.

“Kiss me,” she panted, but just as our lips met, I heard George’s voice echo through the house.

“Grant?Grant?”

“Goddammit,” I whispered against Moira’s mouth before pulling away. I took a moment to look her up and down, looking pretty and wild sitting on my desk, her thick thighs hugged by her athletic shorts. I wanted to go back to her, to run my fingers through her hair and run my tongue over her neck, her breasts, her—

“Grant?”

“What?” I growled, not taking my eyes off Moira until I turned to the door of my office to open it. I stepped out into the hallway, shutting the door behind me and trying to take a single second to catch my breath when George came jogging up the stairs. “What is it?”

“I tried to call. King bit one of the teenagers, broke the skin. I have to drive him down to the urgent care or call the vet over to give the kid stitches.” George leaned on the banister, looking me up and down. “You… exercising or something?”

There was a gleam of mischief in his eyes.

“Yeah,” I lied, giving him a look.

He pursed his lips.

“How bad is it?”

“The bite? He’ll live. King seems pretty proud of himself for cornering the poor kid in the paddock, though.”

“Who was it?”

“One of the new guys, Jake.”

“I’ll drive him into town, don’t worry about it. I need Moira to fill you in on what’s going to happen tomorrow, anyway.” I started walking down the stairs, George following behind me. “The contractors are coming back tomorrow and they’re going to start building that pond I was talking about, then rerouting the creek. We’ll need to keep the cattle out of the area for the next couple of months. Moira can tell you that rest.”

“Where is she?”

“In my office,” I replied, then bit down on my lip as I reached the bottom of the stairs and turned to George, who was looking down at me with a look behind his eyes that told me he’d known exactly what I’d been up to in my office, and it wasn’t exercise.
