Chapter 1: Ivy
Adore You - Miley Cyrus
I choke so hard that hot chocolate bursts from my lips and rolls down my chin to the front of my throat. If I were anywhere outside of the comfort of my apartment and with anyone other than my brother, I’d be mortified.
“Jeez, Ivy,” Brett chuckles, grabbing a hand towel from the drawer behind him and passing it to me. “First time drinking or what?”
I scowl, wiping the mess away from both me and my countertop. “Funny.”At least we’re sitting at the island and not on my velvet couch. Now, back to what made me spit out my drink. “What did you say?”
My brother arches a brow, repeating himself. “First time drinking or what?”
“No,” I groan. “Before that, dufus.”
“First of all, rude,” he gripes, scratching the side of his head. “Second, I was telling you that I’m trying to get Cal and Nik a girl to fuck for Christmas. It’s proving more difficult than I thought, picky bastards have a type.AndI only have five days left!”
I want to ask him to repeat himself again because I honestly don’t think I’m hearing him correctly. Callahan and Nik Mikhaylov—Nik and Cal—are my brother’s best friends and business partners. They’re my best friends too, really.
They’re married and have been for years. One look at the couple and you’d instantly know they’re madly in love. So hearing that they’re interested in sharing a woman, moreover that they have atypeis mind-boggling.
I know that they’re bisexual because it’s been mentioned in the past, but nothing outside of monogamy has ever been brought up before. Trust me, I would remember.
Though, if anyone were to know this about them, it would be Brett. My older brother grew up with Callahan, practically attached at the hip to the man. Now that they’re both thirty, they’ve officially been friends for twenty-five years. Four more years than I’ve even been alive.
Cal met Nik in college, and according to Brett, it was love at first sight. Their love story is his favorite to tell, and I’ve heard it time and time again. He’d never mentionedthisbefore.
“I feel like you’re fucking with me,” I tell him honestly. I feel like I’m being teased, and I don’t know what I did to deserve it.
Dangling a girl’s unattainable crushes in front of her face with unbelievable hope is simply cruel, but Brett would never be cruel on purpose. He doesn’t have a clue that I’ve been falling for Cal and Nik since the first time we met.
Three years ago, on my eighteenth birthday, my life flipped upside down. My foster home kicked me to the curb with a letter and twenty bucks for a bus ticket. I knew they weren’t my biggest fans, but I didn’t think I’d get tossed outonmy birthday. I also didn’t know that they held the keys to another life I’d never known, andforgotabout it until sending me on my way.
The letter was from my birth mother. It was an apology and a detailed message about how to contact my biological father. The letter was meant to be given to the state so they could find him after she dropped me off at the fire station. Somehow, no one opened it. It was still sealed when I shakily opened it that day.
With nowhere else to go, I set out to find a man I never thought I would look for. I made it to the address listed on the old paper after four hours on a public bus. The building looked far too fancy to be the correct place, but I went in anyway, desperately needing a moment away from the cold.
Brett found me going back and forth with the front desk worker, almost in tears as they tried to refuse me. They called him Mr. Collins, and I knew he must be related to who I was searching for and he knew it too. He listened to me, read my letter, and promptly invited me up. To his penthouse.
He sat me down and explained that the man I was looking for was his father.Ourfather, who had passed away four years ago. I’d never get to meet either of the humans who created me, but from that day on, I had Brett.
My new brother immediately moved me in, helped me change my last name to match his, and got me settled. It was the most surreal time of my life. Everything went right, and I had so little worries. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world.
Brett went the extra mile, prying my dreams out of me and helping me accomplish every single one of them. In only a few months, I had an apartment in the same building as him—a much smaller one because it made me feel safer—and a successful virtual cooking blog with millions of supportive fans. He even got me my first pet, a Ragdoll kitten that I named Gouda.
A strange name to some, but perfect for my little lady. A semi-fancy cheese for a semi-fancy cheese-loving gal.
It was soon after getting my kitten that I met Nik and Callahan. To this day I’m grateful that it happened in my brother’s penthouse and not some upscale restaurant where I wouldn’t be able to calm down. One look at them and I was practically panting. Both men were—are—stunning.
Nik with his soft blonde hair, baby blue eyes, defined jawline, anddimples.Callahan with his deep brown curls, smokey green eyes, and full lips. I was dumbstruck, staring at them with my mouth wide open like a gasping fish. I snapped out of it and ducked into the bathroom to collect myself before either of them could see my jaw on the floor.
My blossoming crush only got worse when they spoke. Accents. Both of them have accents.
Cal’s British drawl and Nik’s Russian tone had me almost falling out of my seat. Callahan’s family all spoke that way since they’d only permanently moved to the States after his birth. Nik grew up entirely in Russia, only moving to America for school and then deciding to stay once he found Cal. They were only three years apart in age and saw no benefit to waiting before tying the knot, even while Nik had to finish University.
Where Cal and Brett came from money, Nik didn’t—like me. I learned all that and more as fast as I possibly could. I wanted to know everything about them, even if I knew my infatuation was a fruitless one. They were so kind to me, treating me like a friend immediately and our bond has only grown since then.
Now? Hearing what my brother is explaining to me… I’m wondering if my love for them isn’t so ridiculous. There’s opportunity in the air, I can taste it.
“I’m not fucking with you,” Brett swears. “Why would I joke about this? I’m scrambling to find someone and it’s stressing me out. This is the perfect gift, and I refuse to settle for less.”
