I blush, and she grins. After a moment, I relent and give her a wry smile back.

Then her gaze moves over my shoulder, and she rolls her eyes. “Oh, God. No wonder. That’s what happens when you roll around with animals.”

I glance up to see Jayk, who’s scowling at her like he’s planning her early death. I step a little closer to him and frown at Heather.

Heather leaves with a little finger wave, and Jayk growls beside me.

“I’m going to kill her.” He glares at Dom. “She’s been on me since day one. I’m going to do it.”

“Make sure you pack both stakes and silver bullets,” Jasper mutters into his tea. “We haven’t yet pinpointed her exact species.”

Rather than defending her, Dom gives Jayk a tight look. “I’ll get her to knock it off.”

Both Jayk and Jasper pause. Jasper lowers his cup, examining Dom with minutely raised brows.

Dom’s gaze finds me next. “I’m keeping her from killing them. That’s the best I can do for now.”

It’s my turn for my brows to lift, and I stare at him too.

Dom ignores us, standing. “All of you, move it. We’re not going to be the ones holding up the camp.”

We all watch him go.

“Do you think...” Jasper muses as he gets to his feet, readying his things.

Jayk snorts beside me like he’s breaking out of a trance. “Don’t froth over it. He still thinks she shits diamonds.”

My heart squeezes, my eyes still on Dom’s large, retreating back.

“Perhaps,” Jasper concedes.

But as he brushes past me, he murmurs, “But maybe not for long.”

The panicked screamsstart up again that night, causing an answering hush to fall over the camp. I had wondered, with Bentley gone and no reason to keep pushing for information on the Sinners’ medical reserves, whether Heather might finally decide to kill her captives.

But it seems she really is determined to make Alastair scream.

And he seems just as determined not to.

For the next four nights, Jaykob tries to drag me far enough away that I don’t have to hear Mateo’s panicked, furious cries. But they chase me anyway.

For the next four nights, Heather and Dom disappear for hours and return late, and I dread the new state I see Alastair in every day. Though she carefully rebandages him after everysession, feeding him antibiotics and painkillers like he’s her pet, nothing can hide the swollen, blackening flesh, or the evidence of fresh cuts and burns.

Her hate is eating her alive... and it’s going to swallow Alastair as well.

And with him dead, so is any chance of rescuing the women and children under Sam’s control.
