We walked into Jeff’s office first. It was huge. He had a front room where his desk, and a desk for Nikki, would be. He also had a back room, where he wanted to put a couch, a television, and a play area for the kids, and he’d have his own private full bathroom.
“Very impressive,” she said.
“Mine isn’t quite as elaborate, but it’s nice. I’ve never had my very own office before.”
We walked into my office area. I had jumped the gun and had a desk delivered already. Jeff thought I was crazy, but he didn’t say much else. We stood in the office that was slightly smaller than Jeff’s.
“This is mine. What do you think?”
“I love it. I think it’s perfect for you. Will you have your own bathroom too?”
“Yep. I plan to move my desk and create a small sitting area too. Do you like my desk?”
“Yeah,” she said. She ran her fingers over the top, then along the carved braided trim along the edge. I walked over and pinned her between me and the desk, then placed my hands under her arms and lifted her until she was sitting on the desktop. I pushed her knees apart and nestled my hips between them. I held a handful of her hair in each of my fists and lowered my mouth onto hers. I made sure she could tell how badly I wanted her. Not just at that moment, but for the rest of my life.
“I need to ask you something, darling.”
“You can ask me anything.”
“You know how much you mean to me, right?”
“I do.”
“You know I love you more than I could ever begin to tell you.”
“I feel the same way. I couldn’t live without you.”
I lowered myself onto one knee. Her eyes widened, and she sucked in a deep breath. She had to have known this day was coming. It was finally here. It was now.
“We’ve been through a lot together. I think it’s made our relationship stronger. Don’t you?”
“I agree.”
“Jackie, will you marry me?” I dug in my pocket and pulled out the little box. I didn’t open it. I just held it in my hands.
“What took you so long to ask me? Of course I’ll marry you.” Her arms wrapped tightly around my neck, and her lips found mine. Her hips thrust forward, and I could feel her heat coming through my slacks.
I broke our kiss. “Don’t you want to see the ring?”
“I don’t care about that. I just want you. I’ll see the ring soon enough. I trust whatever you got me will be as perfect as you.”
We spent the next couple of hours celebrating our engagement and christening my new desk. It wasn’t the most comfortable of places to be, but we couldn’t keep our hands off each other.
Chapter 38
Jackie
I couldn’t wait to tell the world I was getting married. I wished my parents were alive so they could’ve gotten to know Hunter like I knew him. I knew they’d have loved him. He was such a great man.
My first phone call was to Nikki, and, just as I’d expected, she went into wedding planner mode.
“Did you guys pick a date yet?” she asked.
“We haven’t had time to talk about the details yet.”
“You’ll have to let me know everything. I’m so excited for you both. We can plan a beautiful wedding.”
Nikki’s excitement was exactly what I’d expected from her, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to have a wedding on the same scale that she had. I wanted something smaller, more intimate. I didn’t need a big wedding.
