“Just for a little walk by the bay. I won’t keep you out late.”
“I’m a big girl. I don’t have a curfew.” She giggled.
“That’s good to know. In that case, I may keep you out all night.” I smiled at her and winked.
“I think at least one date needs to happen before you can do that.” She smiled at me.
As we stood on the grass near the bay, the moon shining brightly above us, I knew I had to come clean. I had no idea what she thought about it, or if she had even caught my near-slip of Sophia’s name, but I had to make sure, either way, the record was set straight. I needed her to know I was not involved with anyone. Not yet, anyway.
She stood and listened to every word I told her without changing the expression on her beautiful face. I told her everything. I probably told her more than I needed to, but I didn’t want there to be any misunderstandings about that first night.
“God has a plan for us all, Hunter. I appreciate you telling me all of this. I wasn’t sure what to think when I heard you almost say her name.”
I didn’t believe in all that religious stuff that she seemed to, but I did believe that everything happened for a reason.
“You had to have thought something. You can tell me. What did you think? Did you think I was cheating on a girlfriend?”
“I didn’t know, but I was trying not to jump to conclusions.”
“Darling, I want you to know I’m attracted to you like no other before you. From the time Nikki introduced us, I haven’t been able to stop thinking of you. I need you in my life. I feel like I can’t live without you.”
Our eyes were locked on each other. I was fighting the urge to pull her to me and rip that tank top from her sexy body. It was at that moment, I saw a single tear slide down her cheek.
“Are you sure? I’m kind of a mess, Hunter. I haven’t been in a relationship for years. I’ve got some pretty bad demons I’m trying to deal with.” She sniffed and wiped the tear from her cheek.
“I’ve never been surer of anything in my life. Whatever you’re dealing with, I want to be that strong shoulder for you to lean on. I want to be there with and for you.” I reached for her hands and held them in mine, then raised them to my mouth and kissed them.
“Thank you. I need that.”
“And I need you.” I pulled her in closer to me, our gaze fixed on each other, then wrapped her arms around my waist.
My hands slowly glided up the soft tan skin of her arms, across her shoulders. I heard her inhale as I let my fingers travel up the side of her neck and around to the base. She licked her bottom lip, then gently bit it, pulling it into her mouth, and I was done. She was sexy beyond belief. When she released her bottom lip from the grip of her teeth, I lowered my head and placed a light kiss on her forehead. I kissed the tip of her nose, then lowered my mouth to hers and gently kissed her lips.
Her arms tightened around my waist, holding me snug against her. Our kiss deepened when she opened her mouth for me. Our tongues connected, and that feeling of an electric current raced through my veins. Her breathing became more erratic, and she rubbed her fingers up along my spine, causing goose bumps to rise on my skin and my cock to stiffen even more. Jeez, I wanted to feel her so bad.
I wrapped my arm around her and drew her in tighter to me. She fit against me perfectly, like we were made for each other. My hand made its way into her silky hair that was flowing freely from the ponytail. I was losing myself and falling deeper for this woman as each second ticked by. I had never felt anything like this before.
Chapter 9
Jackie
Last night ended like a dream. Being held in Hunter’s arms, kissing him, feeling his desire for me pressing against me through my clothes. I was so glad I hadn’t said no to the walk. It felt so good to be desired. And I wanted him in the worst way.
We had made plans to meet up later in the afternoon, which was perfect. That gave me time to get home, go to church, then get back and get my place straightened up before Hunter came by to pick me up. He wouldn’t tell me what he had planned, only that I didn’t need to get all dressed up.
When I opened the door, my jaw dropped. Hunter looked fantastic. He had on a white, collared button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He wore it untucked, and had on a pair of faded blue jeans, and his cowboy boots.
“Come on in,” I said. I had on just a simple coral halter sundress and my flower-topped sandals.
“You look amazing, darling.” I felt my face heat up. He had the most amazing voice I’d ever heard. Deep and sexy, with a slight twang.
“Thank you. You do too.”
I shut the door behind him. “Can I get you anything to drink?”
“Just a water, please.”
I handed him the bottle of water. “I’ll be right back.” I went to touch up my makeup and grab my purse from my bedroom.
