“The name is Landon, pal. I’m the guy who popped this slut’s cherry.” He laughed.

“I really don’t give a fuck what your name is or what you did. Take your fucking hands off my woman and get the fuck out of here.”

“You have no leverage, pretty boy. I’ve got the bitch you want. She belongs to me. So you get the fuck out!”

“I think you’ve mistaken me for one of your pussy friends. Jackie’smygirl, and you’ll let her go. I don’t need leverage, but I will promise to beat the fucking hell out of you if you hurt her any more than you already have.” It felt like fire and smoke were rising out of my collar. My fists clenched at my sides. I was ready to pounce on this asshole and tear him to shreds.

“I like your tough boy toy, sweetheart. Too bad he won’t be able to save you. Perhaps he’d like to watch me fuck you to prove that your filthy whorish ass is mine.”

“Jackie,” I said. She wouldn’t look at me. “Jackie, look at me, baby.” Her eyes stayed focused on the floor. Just when I had given up thinking she would look at me, her eyes shifted in my direction. The deadpan look on her face let me know I needed to do something quick.

“Hey, asshole,” I called to this douchebag. He reached around Jackie and ran his fingers across her pussy. He was so focused on humiliating her, he didn’t see my fist coming. I punched him with all my might in the temple, and his arms fell to his sides before he tumbled to the ground.

Jackie collapsed and crumpled to the ground beside him. She curled into the fetal position and gasped, gagged, and coughed.

I returned my attention to the guy on the ground and kicked him as hard as I could in his ribs, then leaned down and punched him in the face. Blood spatter flew through the air, and I knew I had fucked him up. But I wasn’t done. I wanted this motherfucker dead.

I was ready to make good on my promise to obliterate him when two police officers appeared in the doorway with their guns drawn. I had my foot raised above his stomach and had every intention of stomping the last bit of life from his carcass.

“That’s enough. Get your hands in the air. Now!” one of them screamed at me.

“He’s the fucker you want,” I said.

“I’m not going to tell you again. Get your hands in the air. Keep them where I can see them, and don’t make any quick moves.”

I had no desire to get shot, so I did as requested. I raised my hands above my head and stepped back from Landon. One of the officers went to check on him, then called for an ambulance. The dick with the gun pointing at my chest walked over to me.

“Tell me what’s going on here, and keep your hands in the air.”

I gave him the story from when I arrived, then asked them to get some help for Jackie. She was lying on the floor in a pool of vomit and wasn’t responding to anyone or anything.

After several minutes, two paramedics arrived and took Jackie to the hospital, then another couple of paramedics arrived and took Landon. I got a free ride to the fucking precinct.

Chapter 12

Hunter

By the time the trigger-happy cop finished questioning me, I was furious, and anxious to get to the hospital. My leg jumped non-stop.

They told me they weren’t going to arrest me for assault and battery. They wanted to get Landon’s and Jackie’s statements. When I asked who called them, they said don’t worry about it, but later told me it was a concerned neighbor. They were at least decent enough to give me a ride back to my truck so I could go see my woman. I needed to make sure she was at least in good health physically. I suspected she probably wasn’t doing too well, mentally.

It took some begging and pleading to get in to see her after visiting hours. I may have lied a little and told them I was her fiancé. When I walked into her room, she glanced at me, then rolled over to face the window.

“Hey,” I called to her. I wanted her to turn back to face me, but she didn’t. I walked around to the window side of the bed. When she tried to roll back over to avoid me, I reached down and touched her. “Jackie.” She covered her mouth with her hand, and tears welled in her eyes, spilling down the side of her face.

“Baby, please, don’t shut me out,” I said. Tears began to cloud my vision. I was close to falling apart, but I had to stay strong for her.

“You don’t have to be here, Hunter.” She sobbed. “I’d understand if you left.”

“Are you kidding me? I’m not going anywhere. Wherever you are, that’s where I belong. Why would you think I’d leave?”

“Because.” She shifted in the bed and sat up. The tears were streaming down her face, dripping on the sheet. “Because, Hunter. What he did to me. Everything he’s ever done to me. I don’t deserve you. I never did. He reminded me of that tonight.” Her hands lifted up to cover her face and she sobbed into them.

I sat on the bed next to her. When I placed my hand on her leg, she jumped. What had that fucking guy done to her? What happened?I wanted to know, but I was more concerned about her well-being than what he had done. “It’s just me, baby. No one is going to hurt you as long as I’m around. That much I promise you.”

“I’m so sorry, Hunter. I’m so –.”

“Don’t apologize. It wasn’t your fault. Everything is okay, now.”
