My jaw tightened. “His life isn’t destroyed.”

“Nonetheless, I have to agree with my nephew on this point.”

He advanced another step, and I moved, too, farther away from him, slowly scooting around the island.

“Which point is that?”

Alexander glared at me, all remnants of his pleasant facade finally breaking, replaced by an animalistic look.

“That it was dangerous to threaten someone like that.”

Alexander looked at the blade of my knife as he advanced another step.

The cold air seemed to grow thicker, making it harder to breathe.

“Someone like what?” I whispered, tasting the apprehension on my tongue.

To this, Alexander’s lips curled up slightly, as if taking pleasure in whatever he was about to say.

“Someone who’s been smart enough to conceal the source of those letters.”

Ice crackled through my veins. Maybe he knew about the letters because I’d mentioned them in court that day. But Alexander wasn’t there.

“How do you know about the letters?”

Had Hunter told him about them?

I sidestepped to the right, putting more of the island between us. But Alexander mirrored me, cutting the distance.

His jaw clenched as he said, “You should have let it go.”

And then, with a speed I hadn’t expected, he lunged for me.

CHAPTER54

Luna

Ibrought the butcher knife up and aimed it at his chest, halting him mid-step.

Panic welled up, hot and tight in my stomach.

“What are you doing?” My voice trembled despite my best effort to sound fierce.

“Put the knife down.”

“Don’t make me hurt you.” I had no idea why Alexander was attacking me, but he was the only father figure Hunter had since he was a little boy. No matter the circumstances, I didn’t want to be the one to take that from him.

Alexander inched toward me.

Again, with each step, I matched it with one of my own, keeping the distance between us the same.

Like a morbid dance, we moved in tandem; every step he took, I mirrored the cold weight of the knife grounding me.

“Stay back!” I snapped firmly, but Alexander smirked in response.

With each of his moves, he closed the distance between us, and now, the tip of the butcher’s knife was perilously close to his chest.

Outside, there were armed security guards. All I had to do was get to the front door, open it, and run outside. Alexander would be subdued within moments.
