“Hush” she admonished tearing her gaze away and back to Miriam. “He’s going to hear you. And besides, didn’t we decide that an experience is the way to go?”
Miriam rolled her eyes, “You can ask for a very special experience with him between the sheets.”
“Miriam!” Holly exclaimed just before Cole returned and set their drinks on the counter.
Miriam thanked him as she grabbed their drinks. “Come on.” she said as they walked out the door. “We were supposed to be discussing the holiday party not your fantasies about certain baristas.”
“You’re the one with the fantasies,” Holly said
“Oh please,” scoffed Miriam. “My fantasies aren’t nearly as tame as that. I’d definitely need two baristas.”
Holly gave her a flat look. “I think I’d rather discuss the holiday party.”
Miriam’s eyes lit up. “So you’re going to help?”
“Whatever keeps you from talking about fantasies in the middle of the coffee shop. What if we do Dirty Santa instead of Secret Santa? That way nobody has to try to keep any secrets or struggle with ideas for particular people.”
“Yay!” Miriam squealed as they walked back through their office door. “Come to meeting room C right after lunch and we will get all the details worked out!”
“Will do,” Holly said as she walked back to her desk.
Chapter 3
Holly sighed as she walked through her front door, mind buzzing with thoughts of caterers, venues, and decorations. She was already swamped at work trying to finish up projects before Christmas break and now had an entire office party to plan in just over a week.
Holly decided to treat herself and order a pizza before putting on her favorite ratty pajamas and settling down in front of the TV to wait. In the back of her head, she was also still thinking about her letter to Santa. She didn’t have to do it, but there was something fun about the idea of writing out something she wanted really badly and sending it off into the void.
An experience, she thought, what is something I really want to do?Her mind drifted briefly to Cole. No,she thought banishing that particular line of thinking. If I’m going to write this I don’t want it to be about some guy I maybe have a small crush on. The doorbell rang, shaking her out of her thoughts. Thankfully, it was her pizza. She hoped that stopping the rumbling in her stomach would help her think more clearly.
She opened the door to find the most attractive delivery woman she’d ever seen. She stood shoulder to shoulder with Holly-who wasn’t short by any means-with smooth dark skin and straight white teeth. Even under the uniform polo emblazed with the local pizza logo, Holly could see she had ample breasts and a perfect hourglass figure. Holly stuttered when she handed the woman the money and thanked her. She smiled her dazzling smile and told Holly to have a good night before turning around and walking to her car. Holly shut the door quickly but couldn’t help peeking out the window to watch her leave.
Holly sat the pizza down and got a drink of water. She still felt unsettled and slightly embarrassed. Despite coming out as bisexual in college, Holly had always felt too nervous around attractive women and could never make a move. If she was honest with herself, she was pretty flustered around men too, but they typically made the first move anyway. It had been ages since she had been on a date at all.
Holly looked at the paper she had gotten out for her letter. There were a lot of things dating wise that she wanted to do but didn’t have the courage to make happen. What if she asked Santa for one of those? What was something she had fantasized about but never thought would happen? Thinking of Miriam’s suggestion of an experience, she put her pizza on a plate beside her and wrote out her letter.
As Holly finished her letter, she noticed the chocolate wrapper she had left on the table that morning. She liked to wait and throw them away only after she finished her activity so she wouldn’t forget. She picked up the wrapper and looked at the prompt again as she walked to the trash can. Under the prompt telling her to write to Santa was an address in smaller letters:
1001 Winter Ln
North Pole 89032
She hadn’t noticed that earlier. Did the calendar want her to actually send her letter?Well it’s not like it’s a real address so what’s the harm?Holly went into her home office and dug out an envelope and stamps. She couldn’t remember the last time she had mailed a letter. She stamped and addressed the envelope and stuck the letter in then went ahead and ran out to put it in her mailbox so she wouldn’t have to worry about remembering to do it in the morning. That done, she settled in to watch TV before it was time for bed, the letter and its contents already drifting from her mind.
Chapter 4
Holly got up a little early even though it was Saturday. The holiday office party was later and of course Miriam had roped her into meeting her in the morning to decorate. Before she left, she unwrapped a new candy, this one was dark chocolate with a cherry filling, which instructed her to stand under a mistletoe.
Well that shouldn’t be too hard, thought Holly, because I just know that Miriam probably plans to hide some in every entrance way at the party. Honestly, her friend was an HR nightmare sometimes.
A few hours later
After meeting at the venue getting started on decorations, Catherine, the third member of the new office party planning committee, called and let them know she couldn’t come help because her sitter had come down with a cold and her husband got called into work. Unfortunately that meant all the poinsettias they had bought were still at the office and Catherine informed them there were ‘way too many for one person to carry,’ So they hopped into Miriam’s SUV and went over to the office.
They got to the office and there were indeed too many poinsettias for one person to carry.
“Do you think you maybe went a little overboard with the decorations this year?” asked Holly as they made their third and last trip to the car carrying huge boxes of the potted flowers.
“Nonsense” Miriam said “You can’t be too festive at a Christmas party.”
