“I know, which is why I’m wondering what inspired you to host a cookie decorating party? You don’t even like having people at your house.”
Miriam dug through the bag of cookie cutters Holly had brought. “ I don’t even know to be honest,” she said. “I just woke up this morning and all I could think was we should decorate cookies today. Like it was the first thing that popped into my head and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
Holly bit her lip. “What time did you get up this morning?” she asked.
“I don’t know, maybe around nine thirty, ten? Why?”
Weird,Holly thought. That’s around the time I got up and opened the advent calendar.“Oh no reason,” she said. “I was just curious.”
Together they got the cookies cut out and into the oven. Miriam had just gotten out the last batch when their friends arrived.
It ended up being a great night. They told stories, drank wine, and laughed at their poor artistic skills. Miriam sent Holly home with an entire tin full of sugar cookies, including the Santa cookie she had decorated to be “sexy” with no shirt and red briefs.
By the time Holly got home, it was well past her bed time. She peeled off her clothes and got straight into bed where she dreamed sweet dreams of being fed cookies by a hunky Santa.
Chapter 8
Holly put the cookies in the oven and set the timer before picking up her phone to check her texts. It was Christmas Eve and Miriam had invited her to her family’s annual gathering.
Family is arriving around 6, don’t worry I didn’t invite any extra guests this timeread the text from Miriam.
Holly smiled before responding. Yesterday had been fairly uneventful, the prompt only instructing her to eat a candy cane. After the crazy things happening all month it seemed a little boring. It had snowed that day so she sat at the window and watched the snow fall for a while as she sucked on the candy cane and reflected on the past couple weeks since getting the calendar. It had almost felt like when her mom was alive and they spent their Christmases together.
Holly’s dad passed away when she was too young to remember and neither parent had been close to their families so it was always just Holly and her mom around the holidays.
Her aunt’s family lived in Maine, but she didn’t feel like she knew them well enough to fly to their house for Christmas. This was why Holly was so grateful to have a friend like Miriam. Miriam had invited Holly to all her family holiday gatherings since her mom’s passing. It was different than Christmas with her mom, but still so much better than moping around her house by herself.
Holly cleaned up the kitchen while the cookies baked. She planned on bringing them to the party, but her advent calendar, a delectable chocolate filled with orange cream, had also instructed her to leave out milk and cookies for Santa tonight. It was silly, but she had done every other task, so she might as well do this last one. She hoped Santa liked chocolate chip.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Hoffman-Taylor gathering was in full swing by the time Holly arrived. As soon as Miriam’s mom opened the door, Holly was swept into the large boisterous family’s festivities. Holly loved Miriam’s family; they didn’t mind that she was shy, and they always made her feel right at home. Even though Hannukah had already ended, both sides of Miriam’s family had gathered just to enjoy each other’s company. Miriam's paternal and maternal grandmothers had become best friends following her parents' marriage, bringing both Catholic and Jewish sides of the family together for the holidays. Holly spotted the two matriarchs talking animatedly as she walked into the room.
Holly had always wondered what it would be like to have a large family growing up, and while she had enjoyed spending time with Miriam’s chaotic clan, she had a new appreciation for the quiet holidays spent with her mom and occasionally her aunt and few cousins. She loved the constant flow of conversation and how much they all clearly loved each other, but Holly always felt like she needed a few days to recover alone after being around so many people.
She laughed with Miriam’s uncles, drank wine with the grandmothers, and sang silly carols with the younger children, and when it came time to open presents, Holly was touched that Miriam’s parents and grandparents had all gotten her a few things to open. By the time she was ready to head home she had a small tote bag of gifts and several plates of leftovers. Miriam’s father had fussed about her having a proper Christmas dinner and loaded the plates with enough food to last her two or three more days.
It was already getting close to midnight when Holly made it home. She put the various leftovers into her fridge and had started to unpack the bag of gifts when she noticed a medium-sized box still wrapped. That’s strange,Holly thought,Miriam’s mom must have slipped it in when she was helping me pack up my gifts. The sweet woman probably wanted to make sure she had something to open on Christmas Day.
Holly looked at the tag on the outside of the box:To Holly:Wear this tonight xoxo.
Hmm that’s even stranger, thought Holly.Miriam must have snuck this in, not her mom, but why didn’t she sign it?Holly carefully unwrapped the gift and opened it to find a beautiful red silk negligee trimmed with delicate black lace around a plunging neckline. Holly began searching the box for another card, but it was only tissue paper and the attached note.
Holly sent a text to her friend asking why she needed to wear it tonight. She understood why Miriam hadn’t given it to her to open in front of her family, but it still didn’t make sense why her friend hadn’t signed her name. Her phone buzzed with a response right away:What are you talking about?
Holly frowned at the text, then stared at the nightgown in frustration. If Miriam hadn’t given it to her, then who had? Holly texted Miriam backnever mind, enjoy your Christmas, she responded, before turning her attention back to the box. She inspected the wrapping: gold with subtle, delicate swirls and translucent red ribbon. There were no hints anywhere on the wrappings as to who had given it to her. She was the only Holly at the party, so it was definitely meant for her. This was all so strange.
Holly thought it over while she put away her other gifts. When she finished, she picked up the garment again, running the buttery smooth silk along her fingers. It was more luxurious than any clothing item she had ever owned. She couldn’t help but to imagine how it would feel against her skin. She decided to put it on.Why shouldn’t I,she thought.
Holly slipped on the negligee and found it was even softer than she had imagined. She ran her hands over her breasts, her stomach and hips, the sensation making her nipples prick slightly. The gown fell down to just over her knees and had come with a matching pair of underwear that was just a little more cheeky than she typically preferred, but still felt magnificent all the same.
Holly put Santa’s milk and cookies on the coffee table before settling down on the couch. She was still too keyed up by the mysterious nightgown to sleep, so she put on a Hallmark movie and snuggled under a blanket.
Chapter 9
Holly awoke to a thump outside. She glanced around in confusion until she realized she was still on the couch, the Hallmark Channel a dull murmur in the background. She must have fallen asleep out here, but what woke her up? She jumped as she heard another thump.Did that come from the roof? She glanced up at the TV clock above the fireplace. It was just after three am.
All of a sudden, her fireplace turned on, casting the room in a warm soft life. She heard another thump, and then two boots poked out from above the fire. How was this possible? The chimney was bricked up and it was just a fake electric one in the opening. The boots slid down further, and she saw the beginnings of white fur trim and then velvety red fabric. Before she knew it, the fireplace widened to reveal the rest of a tall broad shouldered man with a thick white beard and twinkling blue eyes.
