She started to protest, but he pulled up the blanket, tucked it under her chin, and stepped back.
“Stay,” she whispered.
He wavered. Just for a moment. But Link didn’t want his first official sleepover to happen on a night when his girlfriend had had too much wine.
“Not tonight. I’ll come back, though.”
“Promise?” She smiled lazily and grabbed her pillow. “You smell good.”
“Yeah?”
She nodded. “Like summer rain.” She sighed. “I love summer rain. It’s so fresh.”
“Call me tomorrow,” he said, backing away. Pancake stood in the doorway, head tilted to the right as he gazed at the bed. Link would grab some water and pain meds and leave those on the side of her bed before he went home. He stepped past the dog and took another look at his sleeping beauty.
She was already snoring lightly, but damn, that smile was still on her face.
