Lex smiled back at her. “Harry stole her parents’ boat? I guess that Zane and I need to ask Harry about that sometime.”
“I’ve never heard the whole story either,” she admitted, rolling her eyes. “Everyone always says that I’m too young and it’s better not to think about the past.”
Without thinking, Lex reached over, lightly patting her hand. “I get it, you know. I keep trying to remember, because that way, maybe someday I can figure out where I came from.”
With a furtive glance around the table, Amy answered softly, “Me, too.”
Lex blinked. So, Amy was more or less in the same situation as they were?
Lex squeezed her hand, nodding reassuringly before letting it go to begin scooping food onto his plate.
Once everyone was settled at the table eating, Mr. Giordano started talking about what would be happening soon.
“Dr. Donnelly will be here in about an hour. I’m thinking that Zane and Lex might want to see him together first, and then they can both be there in the room when Caleb gets checked out.”
“If you want me in there too, just tell me,” Harry said softly, looking at Zane first and then at Lex.
“Thanks,” Zane answered. “We should be fine. You’re in a good place right now, Harry, so you shouldn’t have to be reminded too much about the past.”
“I’ll admit, I did have a few bad dreams last night,” Harry confessed, sounding grim.
Izzy laid her hand over Harry’s. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. You and Eve helped Amy and me more than you could ever know,” Harry replied.
“You’re the best brother I could have ever had,” Izzy admitted softly.
Harry grinned. “I’m sure there were times when you didn’t think that at all.”
Izzy grinned back. “Believe it or not, not really. When you started playing those stupid jokes on me, I knew you were getting better.”
Lex looked at the two of them curiously.
“But don’t you dare tell them about any of the things you did right now,” Izzy muttered. “There are a lot of secret passages leading everywhere, and Harry must have explored every single one of them.”
Mom and Dad looked startled as Harry laughed.
“I never showed them all to Izzy because I was afraid that some of those passageways might not be safe,” Mrs. Giordano said, grimacing. “I can’t believe we didn’t know you were sneaking around, Harry.”
“I was afraid if you knew, you would stop me,” he admitted.
“Harry…,”Mrs. Giordano growled.
Clearing his throat, Mr. Giordano rolled his eyes. “I’ve got to admit—I probably would have been the same way myself at his age. At least he’s still in one piece, Luce. Let’s get back to business for now,” he said. “I’ve already taken a swab from Caleb for a DNA match, but I’ll take one from Lex and Zane after we’re finished eating.” He held up a hand when Lex got ready to ask a question. “Don’t worry. You’ll be the first to know the results, and then we can discuss any potential problems after that.”
Staring into each other’s eyes, Lex and Zane both nodded.
Apparently noticing how little food remained on the table, Izzy grinned. “You guys can sure eat. Don’t get sick. If you’re not used to eating as much as you have since yesterday, it could come back to haunt you.”
“I can’t believe you’re bringing that up.” Harry groaned, punching her in the arm. “I should have known you were going to find a way to get back at me for when I was creeping around the passageways, trying to haunt you.”
“Me?” Izzy tried to appear angelic.
Zane snorted, looking at Harry. “What happened?”
“Let’s just say, nothing agreed with me at first, no matter how bland it was, and leave it at that. I had a bucket next to my bed for an entire weekend after I first moved in.”
Izzy laughed when Zane and Lex both put down their forks when they were offered dessert.
