“So, Matt told you, huh?” she asked.
“He’s worried. With my income, you can go to school and have your expenses covered along with your health insurance. I’ve been saving pretty much everything I’ve earned.”
She huffed out a breath. “Is that the only reason you’re asking?”
“Of course not,” he muttered, suddenly horrified at how his proposal must have come across.
He stepped out of bed and bent down on one knee. “Amy, I love you more than anyone or anything in the world. Will you please do me the honor of becoming my wife—quickly?”
She burst into laughter.
“Of course, I will. I love you so much, Lex.”
Returning to the bed, he kissed her deeply.
Finally, he broke away. “Let’s go do what we have to on Monday. That probably means getting a license and possibly blood tests.”
“We’re not telling anyone?”
“Let’s play it by ear. Mom and Dad would be disappointed if we didn’t do something to celebrate.” He pursed his lips. “How would you feel if we don’t have a real ceremony?”
“We could always do that later. Renew our vows or something similar.”
“I like that idea,” he said gruffly. “We need to include the entire family somehow.”
“Good.”
Lex blinked when there was a sudden scratch on the door.
“You forgot about Brownie.” Amy started laughing, standing and donning her robe and heading to the door to let him inside. “He’s probably been sleeping out there in front of your door since you went to bed.”
“Poor guy,” Lex said dryly, but grinned when Brownie rushed inside, climbing up the staircase before plopping down in the middle of the bed, expecting more attention after being ignored.
Chapter Thirty-Seven
They were both a little tired because they hadn’t had a whole lot of sleep, but Amy was smiling widely when she entered the kitchen early the following morning to help Mom cook breakfast.
Smiling, Mom gave her a side glance, but didn’t say a word.
“I feel like cooking something special,” Amy said. “Why don’t you go sit down and have some coffee with Dad while I make breakfast today?”
Mom kissed her on the cheek, studying her closely.
“I have a feeling that I know why you’re so happy today, but I think I’d rather not think too hard about it,” she said dryly.
Amy laughed. “How about pancakes today along with eggs, bacon and hash browns? Lex should be down in a minute, so I can recruit him to help if he doesn’t eat everything before it reaches the table.”
“That sounds great. Thanks, dear,” Mom said, patting her shoulder before reaching for her coffee and heading into the solarium.
Lex appeared a few minutes later. Apparently, he’d had a few calls to make and wanted to get them out of the way.
“What can I do?” he asked, peeking inside the kitchen.
“I think I heard either Arielle or Ash setting the table. How about carrying out the cinnamon rolls from the bakery? They’re in the warmer. And then you can come back and fetch the eggs and bacon and first batch of pancakes.”
“That sounds great. I’m kind of starving today,” he admitted.
“I wonder why?” she asked dryly.
