“I already am.”

Chapter10

BROCK

Aknock sounds at the door. It’s Amber, looking bedraggled as all hell. It’s been over a year since she’s come around. I figured she’d finally grown tired of me.

“What’s going on?” I ask.

She staggers through the door, falling into my arms.

I bring her to the couch and grab her a cup of water. There are sores between her fingers and at the corners of her eyes and lips.

“You’re sick,” I whisper.

She nods. “Have been for some time.”

“The taint?”

“Yep.”

“Why are you back here? Why isn’t Easton taking care of you?”

She snorts in disdain. “He threw me out.”

“What? He can’t do that! What about your kids?”

She looks away. “There are no kids.”

“What the hell do you mean, there are no kids? I saw your belly big and round.”

“What do you think happens to babies that are born in times like these?”

“Jesus Christ…”

“I would have had longer if I hadn’t kept getting pregnant. The babies stole my strength.”

She sets the glass on the table and lies down on the couch.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m tired,” she says, brow furrowed. “Can’t you see that?”

“You can’t stay here.”

“What do you mean?”

“You need to leave.”

“But I have no place to go.”

“You should have thought of that before you left, ten years ago.”

“I was sixteen and hungry!”

“You were all I ever wanted. I would have taken care of you.”

“Like you take care of all the other women in your life? Jasmine and Polly and Rachel. The revolving door of whores you have sucking your cock.”
