“Who’s that?” Shaun whispers.

I raise my fingers to my lips. “Paint me a picture. Stay there until I tell you it’s safe for you to come out.”

He nods excitedly, as if thinking it’s one of the hide-and-seek games we play. Still acting the role, I cautiously walk down the steps and glance over my shoulder to see my son’s little head wedged between the door and frame.

Once I reach the last step, three knocks sound at the door.

I open the door to find Maverick glaring at me. He’s wearing a navy-blue hoodie, dark jeans, and his baseball cap.

“Hey,” I say but he continues to glare.

He lets out an irritated “Hey.”

“What?” I ask.

“You answer the door but not my texts?”

Oh. That was him.

“I’m sorry. I haven’t checked my phone. I wanted to check on my son.”

His face softens and he nods with understanding. “I’m sorry, I was worried when you didn't respond.”

There’s an awkward silence.

“So, what did your text say?”

He gives me an adorable smile. “I want to take you out on a date.”

“A date?” I raise my brow. “Like...a date, date?”

“What other way is there to define a date?”

I chuckle. “Smart ass.”

He takes a step forward until we’re toe to toe. “Go out with me.” He tangles a strand of my hair with his finger.

“What if people see us?”

He drops his hand, and a hurt expression appears on his face. “Are you afraid of people seeing us together as a couple?”

I shake my head. “No, I’m not, but I thought you would be...you know, since you’re trying to stay low key.”

“It’s too late for that. My agent called this morning and said that word has already been spreading of my whereabouts, but I don’t care. Unless you’re uncomfortable to be seen together? We can stay in.”

“No, It’s not that. Wait, you think we’re a couple? Is that what you think this is?” “What else would it be? I had my cock inside you. If that doesn’t say we’re a couple, I don’t know what does.”

My face heats from his dirty words. Remembering that night of endless sex and orgasms.

“You’re thinking about that night, aren’t you?” He’s looking at me with desire as if he’s undressing me with his eyes.

I clear my throat.

Clearly, it’s affecting me. “You... you should go.”

He grins. “So, seven o’clock?”

I nod and watch him walk away with a stupid grin. When I close the door, Shaun is sitting on the end of the steps with a wary look on his face.
