His constant affection and compliments make me feel beautiful, confident.Dreams do come true… another sign.
“When I found her in that fruit cellar, and she told me about Ethan and running away, she told me ‘The truth always finds you.’”
A smile curls his full lips, and he lets out a low, “Ahh… She outed herself? Or did she want you to know?”
“I think maybe she wanted me to know.” Scooting closer, I snuggle into his side. “I never really knew my mom. I’m glad I get the chance to make up for it now.”
“It’s how I feel about you.” His fingers thread in my hair again. “All those years, and I never knew… Now I can. Now I can make up for everything I got wrong and show you how much I’ve always loved you.”
“You didn’t get much wrong.” I turn my face to kiss the warm skin of his chest. “We both were on a journey.”
“I’m glad it brought me back to you.”
“Me, too.”
Sitting up again, he holds my shoulders so I’ll face him. “I’m supposed to ask you one thing. I was given an assignment.”
It makes me laugh even though I’m frowning. “Okay?”
“I love you. I want to be with you. You have to tell me if there’s any reason why we can’t be together.”
Lifting my chin, I gaze straight into his pretty blue eyes. “I don’t have a reason. I want us to be together.”
“Then we always will be.”
Reaching up, he slides his thumb over my cheek, and I lean forward to meet his kiss. Our lips part, and we slide down into the bed. My core is warm and slippery, and it’s not long before he’s sliding between my thighs, making us one.
Trust is a tricky thing. It can come so fast, and it can be lost so easily. But if you work really hard, and if you have faith and maybe a little luck, you can find it again.
Just like love.
EPILOGUE
ADAM
“We’ll start by replumbing the upstairs, then we’ll repair the subfloor and plaster over the hole.” Chuck points with his pencil to all the different construction points. “We should be done by Saturday.”
“Seriously? It’s Thursday.” I look around the messy room.
“We’ll make up the time, since we’re late getting started.”
“Oh, don’t feel like you need to rush.” Piper calls from where she’s standing at the front door. “We’re all set for now, and I’d rather you take your time and do it right.”
“I’ll get it done, and you’ll be happy with the work.” I catch a hint of defensiveness in his tone, and I jump in quickly.
“Thanks, Chuck. I know it’ll be great. Just let me know if you need anything.”
Heading to the door, I catch Piper’s hand with Ryan following behind us. “Once he’s done, we’ll hire someone to come in and clean, then we can pack it up and put it on the rental market.”
Her eyes widen as if she’s startled, and I do my best not to take it personally. “Unless you’re having second thoughts about staying with me?”
“No… it’s just… This was the first house I ever bought. It’s the one thing that ever belonged completely to me.”
We’re at the door to theGazette, and I lean my elbow on the wall beside her cheek.
Bending down, I kiss her lips. “In that case, we’ll do whatever you want. I’d never ask you to part ways with your favorite house.”
She traces her finger in a circle on the neck of my tee, a little smile curling her lips. “Your house is my favorite house.”
