Is he safe?

Hell, is he even alive?

I need to know.

The twin holding onto Emily sighs. “Well, there isn’t shit we can do about this tonight. Guess we’re all staying over.”

“Nah. I’ve got something I need to handle,” Shane answers, his eyes finding mine.

Startled that he looked at me with regard to the statement, I say nothing because I have no clue what he has planned.

It’s a silent exchange for a few seconds, and what becomes an unspoken, temporary truce.

“Can you behave if I take you out in public?”

Behave?

I hate the language he chooses but consider the question.

“What do you mean? I’m not agreeing to some blanket question.”

“Always a fucking pain in the ass,” he mutters.

The twins laugh quietly but turn away to continue staring at what’s left of the cars.

“You wanted to talk to your friend. Can you call her?”

“Ames?” I ask, a little surprised he still remembers after the explosions that ended our former discussion.

“If that’s her name, yes. Can you call her?”

Shaking my head, I consider my options. “She’s at work tonight. She’s a dancer at—”

“Myth,” he finishes for me.

I want to question how he knows that, but then I remember they spent time watching me.

“That’s what I thought. So if you can’t call her and you want to check on her, we need to go to Myth.”

Shocked that he’d even make the offer, I ask, “So your car is okay to drive?”

A relieved smile graces his lips. I can’t help but admire the expression. He’s already gorgeous, but when he smiles…

“Yeah, Beauty is untouched. They must not have seen her where she was parked over in the shadows.”

“Lucky bastard,” one of the twins mutters. He turns to Shane. “But seriously, I’m happy she’s okay. That car is damn near one of a kind.”

This isn’t just any car…

Now his words make sense, the reverence he had for something as ordinary as a car when he first showed it to me at the auto shop.

It’s gorgeous, I’ll give it that. He didn’t miss one detail restoring it. But to hear how rare it is, I realize the car must be worth a fortune.

I’m beginning to suspect, with Shane, that the fortune it’s worth isn’t only a monetary value, but there’s something else about that old car he fell in love with.

“You two are going to Myth? I’ll go along for the ride.”

We turn to see one of the twins walking toward us. The other one hangs back with Emily, and one of these days, I need to learn how to tell them apart.
