“You’re not second guessing marrying me, knowing what my family is like?” I ask. It’s been on my mind. “I know Tristan is a breeze, but ...”
“All families are messy in some way or another. You’ve met our father and mother. Lief’s parents are great together, but rarely in one place for long and are always rearranging their schedules,” Chase says.
I nod once.
“And we’re not marrying your family, baby doll. We’re marrying you. None of us have second guesses. You already would have spotted them and knocked some sense into us,” Chase promises. “No one reads us better than you.”
There’s no trace of deceit in his eyes. He holds my gaze as his eyes soften, then he pushes his hair out of his face. “Should I cut my hair before we get married?”
“Whatever you want, Chase.” I move closer and kiss him. “I love you. If you want to, do it. I want you as the man you are ... but that doesn’t go for Lief. I’d be so sad.”
He laughs and rubs my back, hugging me. “What do you mean? I didn’t see you today.”
“Of course not,” I murmur.
“We got here at separate times and your mom wasn’t here,” he whispers. “Tomorrow, we’re walking down the aisle, saying a ton of sappy things and we’re going to compete to make you cry, then we’re going to take turns stealing you from the reception and from photos to start the honeymoon early.”
“Well, now that I know, I’ll have to give Kon more jobs,” I tease.
He rubs my hands and squeezes them tight. “I can’t wait to see you in your dress. Can’t wait to hear you say, I do, and can’t wait to hear you call me your husband.”
“I can’t call you baby boy anymore can I? You’re a boss now,” I hum.
“You better not change nicknames on me now.” He winks and stands. He stretches and sighs. “Are you determined to have this night apart?”
“It’s not easy for me either,” I murmur. “It’s not, but I want tomorrow to be special in every way. Let me stay with the girls and you guys stay together making a long to-do list for our honeymoon.”
“Can do, baby doll,” he promises, offering me his hand.
I hop up with him and we part ways without a kiss. It doesn’t matter though. Seeing Chase, feeling his support, knowing that we’re going into this wedding knowing all of each other’s worst secrets, makes everything feel right.
Now I just have to finish my vows for Lief since I’m not as good with words as he is and hope that Sophia finished her maid of honor speech.
“Everything will be fine,” I tell myself.
SEVENTEEN
Lief
“Where the hell is my tux?”Hunter yells.
“What do you mean, the flowers are delayed?” Chase bellows into his phone.
I watch them try to tackle each issue the morning of our wedding day. I sigh, grab a phone, and call my father. “Can you bring the backup flowers please and a tux in Hunter’s size? I think we’ll also need some food.”
“Fucking fix it!” Chase orders.
“Sounds like you might need more than food,” my father says.
“I’ll call my bride for some sedatives,” I say.
“We’ll meet you at the venue and get everything taken care of. Don’t worry,” he says before hanging up.
It’s not a challenge. I rarely worry about anything. I just fix it or find an alternate option. Hunter hangs up and counts ten deep breaths, just like Valerie taught him. He looks at me. “Where’s your issue?”
“I’m having a tux brought for you and my father has back up flowers. They’re fake versions of what we purchased. I have insurance on all our deposits in case someone doesn’t come through. The cake is being delivered in an hour,” I say.
Chase hangs up and rubs his temple. “I went to the venue yesterday, I did all these checks, and I was told everything was on schedule. We can’t let Valerie know.”
