“No.”
“Why did you track me down, then?”
“Mr. Templeton called you minutes before he died.”
Koffitz nodded. “Yes.”
“What did you talk about?”
“We didn’t. He left a message. That was the last I heard until I saw the news the next morning.”
“Why did he call you?”
“Because he was having me prepare an alternate will.”
My eyes widened. “What? But another firm – ”
“Yes, Oligivy Hasten and Schmidt prepared the official one. But he wanted an alternate version – one he was prepared to sign after he had dinner with you and Connor that night. We were supposed to meet the following morning so he could look over the documents. Instead…”
Mr. Koffitz trailed off.
“How was the new will different?” I asked.
“The old will split stock ownership of the Templeton Group 50/50 between Lenora and Vincent. The new will cashed them both out for nearly two billion dollars each, and gave complete ownership of all of Augustus’s voting shares to one recipient.”
“Vincent?” I asked, confused.
“No. Connor.”
…WHAT?!
“That’s impossible!” I gasped.
“I have the will. You can read it for yourself.”
“You said you didn’t have any proof!”
“I said I couldn’t offer you any proof that Miranda had Augustus killed,” Koffitz said. “However, I might just be able to provide a motive for why she would want him dead.”
The silver-haired lawyer disappeared into the back of the house. I looked at Johnny, who seemed equally bewildered – but after a few seconds of hesitation, we followed.
