That day I lost my boyfriend and my home. Now my ex could be in a hospital bed, begging for me to see him before he takes his last breath, but I won’t be going to visit him. I’m certainly never spending Christmas with him.
But to keep my mother happy, I choose to keep it all to myself.
“You’re getting older. Alphas prefer younger omegas and your biological clock won’t tick forever. You have to think about these things.”
“I’m going to travel first.”
“Travel! It’s not safe.” She sighs before she says, “You have to live your own life, Holly, not your sister’s.”
I roll my eyes to the ceiling. Here we go again. “Love you, Mom. Enjoy your vacation.” I disconnect before she can drag out the conversation any further.
As I turn around, the men are staring ahead, giving me the opportunity to study them.
The two men share a similar stature, standing shoulder to shoulder. One is much younger. He looks like he’s a gym bunny with his wide shoulders and massive arms.Typical alpha.
As he turns around, a sly grin spreads across his face, and directed at me.
I smile and turn away, just as the elevator pings and the doors grind open.
I’m ready for another shitty day in the office. Another day of trying to prove myself to my boss, who appreciates nothing I do for him.
Hopefully, soon, I’ll get my break out of here.
I really loathe my boss. And this isn’t one of those stories where I secretly love him. There’s no burning sexual tension, and no, I won’t go looking for a fire extinguisher if he was on fire. I’d open a packet of marshmallows and toast them while he burned.
Don’t get me wrong, he feels the same way about me. He doesn’t appreciate one thing I do for him. I think he secretly sends me out of the office to get me out of his way.
Probably trying to find a reason to sack me. But I need the job—at least until I find the perfect position in marketing. One day I know I’ll get my lucky break, or maybe I’ll be brave enough to unlock tier four on my OmegaFans account.
I readjust my bag and follow the two men out of the elevator and down the corridor.
“Holly!” my lovely colleague Polly shouts from behind me and I turn. “Where have you been? He’s fuming because he’s been trying to call you.”
I sigh. “On my lunch... getting his lunch, which I need to get to him before I can eat my lunch.”
I’m so over this job.
Polly gives me a hard-luck look and I spin on my heels, but just as I walk by my boss’s office my gaze catches onto gorgeous hazel eyes sitting opposite him.
He fills his suit like Henry Cavill does when he graces the red carpet. All hard edges with a wide chest, broad shoulders, and amazing high cheekbones.
He feels my gaze and turns his face to me. I should look away, but I continue staring as I walk to the door and knock.
“Come in,” Jed, my boss, calls. “And bring your laptop.”
Chapter 3
Holly
Mybossglaresatme as I take a seat away from the table. I try not to inhale or look at the man sitting in front of him as I open the laptop and stare at the screen.
“I tried to call you,” Jed says, in front of his clients.
I glance up at him, swallowing as I wonder how he is going to react. The man is so unprofessional, and it doesn’t seem to matter if he has clients. He has no class.
The trouble is there’s mutual hatred between my boss and me. He knows I’m not the timid girl he hired that day.
Omega or not. I earned my backbone the hard way.
