She said it with such venom I knew she was telling the truth. And it should be easy for me to hear. It’s what I wanted to hear at the end of our time together. But I wanted her to fall hard for me before she said those words.
I yearn for her to feel the same level of hurt that she caused me.
What’s the point of revenge if she doesn’t know why?
What’s the point of her hating me without realizing I hated her too...
I long to hear those words after she has succumbed to love for me, not at this moment.
“I’m sorry.” I stare at her from over the rim of my glass of bourbon and study her reaction.
She pivots and fixes her gaze on me for an instant while a lone tear descends her cheek. She sniffles as she wipes it away and says, “What time are we leaving tomorrow?”
“Talk to me.”
She shakes her head. “We have nothing to talk about. Talking is for beta couples, not for lowly omegas who are born to be submissive to their pack or alphas.”
“You’re not submissive or a lowly omega.”
“I’m an omega who took money to spend ten days with an alpha and do what he wanted. I’m as fucking low as it gets.” She hiccups back a sob. “You might despise me, but I’ve never lied to you.”
I grunt. You’re fucking lying to me now.
“But as you believe nothing I say, what’s the point of talking or explaining?” She sighs. “I don’t know why it matters, anyway.”
I furrow my brow, bewildered.
“I don’t understand you. If I want a pack, it’s none of your business. I’m here with you in the present moment only. Next week, this transaction will be over.”
“It’s because I don’t like liars.”
She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes, blinking, for a few seconds. “And I told you I don’t want a pack. Yet, once again, you don’t believe me. What difference does it make?”
“I just want honesty.”
“Fuck you, Aiden.” She taps her head. “You’ve got something weird going on in that head of yours. But it’s your weird. Keep me out of it.”
I clasp her hand, exerting pressure as I forcefully bring her nearer to me. “Tell me what you really think.”
“Okay. I believe you orchestrated the rendezvous with the gentleman in the sex club. You were curious about my behavior amidst the company of other alphas.” She hesitates and purses her lips. “You wanted to see if the alpha pheromones would send me into a frenzy. And sorry, but you failed.”
“You failed.”
She forcefully releases her hand from my grasp and vehemently shakes her head. “Okay, I want a pack. Does that make you feel better? Hearing what you believe. What’s your problem with packs, anyway?”
“I don’t like packs. I don’t want to share.”
She smiles. “You’re lying. All alphas want to be in packs.”
“I don’t want a fucking pack,” I growl.
“And I don’t. So why do you think I’m lying?” Her voice rises with each word.
For once, I actually think she’s telling the truth. She engages in activities that are the antithesis of what most omegas do. Not only working but also by disregarding the need for her alpha or a pack to claim her, she is going against the natural instincts of her designation. But why? “What happened to you?”
“Nothing.” She sighs and stands, turning her back to me and walking to her room. “Absolutely nothing. Now, if you don’t mind, I want to go to sleep and get another day out of the way.”
While we’re flying back to New York the next morning, I glance her way. She’s sitting opposite Harry, but she’s not talking to anyone. She’s looking out of the window. Staring at nothing but the clouds in the sky.
