Has she recognized me yet?
“Coffee?” I ask. “I found a nice cafe.”
She winks, thinking this is still part of my ruse to get her away from him. “You’re perfect.”
“You should’ve realized that last night,” I say.
She laughs. “Better late than never.”
“You’re not leaving. Your mother was talking to mine and they want us to try again,” Toby hisses. “She wants you to be happy.”
“Happy? Nothing will make me happy. And it doesn’t work like that, Toby. If I was that stupid, I would still live with you and not in a cramped apartment with three other girls. But their hormones are better than putting up with your cheating.”
Toby shakes his head, standing away from the wall as his dark eyes remain on Holly. The act makes her press her shoulders back, as she tries not to crumble at his stare. Finally, he lowers his mouth to her ear and whispers, “This is not over.”
I growl, “You’ll find it is.”
He pauses, glaring between her and me. “He’s fucking old, Holly. He’ll be an old man with shriveled up sperm before you’re ready to have children.” He gets closer, not noticing my bodyguards closing in.
I give them the nod that this is being handled. They stand back as Holly says, “Maybe it turns out I just didn’t want children withyou. My mom must have told yours that I’m waiting for a scent match. And you’re not my alpha.”
“Holly,” I warn her. Don’t poke the bear any more.
“There’s no such thing as matching scents. I’m an alpha, you’re an omega, and that is all we need to be.” He gives a flick of his wrist as he turns to me. “She’ll come back to me. Because I bet she thinks of me while she’s fucking you.”
“Toby, you never gave me anything to remember,” she says, spiking my curiosity.
“Because you wouldn’t let me fucking knot you!” he yells.
She shakes her head, her high ponytail swaying in protest.
He turns to me, his voice barely audible as he whispers, “Don’t waste your time with her. She’s broken.”
“I’m not broken!” she yells.
I take Holly’s hand before I use mine to punch him until he’s pounded into the ground. I’d like to say I won’t stoop to his level and that the importance of my work prevents me from getting involved in his games, but for her, I’ll make him know she can’t be messed with.
But I also know I can’t get too emotionally involved, because whatever is happening between us won’t be forever. I also can’t have her getting attached like omegas do.
I can’t have that commitment in my life again.
“Holly… Holly!” he yells as I walk her away from him. “I’ve got a pack now.”
My hand loosens on hers when I feel a constriction on my shoulders, like invisible shackles are holding me back.
“I don’t want a pack!” she shouts, not even turning around to give him her response.
My heart beats frantically.
I want to ask her, and when we finally reach the café, I face her. Adrenaline courses through my veins. “You don’t want a pack?”
She shakes her head. “No. Why?”
“Because most omegas do,” I say, pushing the door open to the café and waiting for her to go inside.
“Not this one. I’m saving up and when I’ve got enough money, I’m going to travel the world,” she says.
Our stares clash as I take in what she means. “You don’t want an alpha either?”
