“You pursued me because I ghosted you?” She shakes her head. “This... Us... This was... What was this exactly?”

I rush to my feet and hurriedly make my way towards her, but just as I reach her, she extends her palm, signaling me to halt.

As hurt and betrayal intermingle in her expression, I explain. “Do you have any clue what you do to me? You spoke to me every night for a year. You got me out of my depression. You turned my life around and I thought you wanted the same thing.”

“No!” She leaps to her feet, shaking her head as she walks to the window, and stares out at the people walking in the park below.

Shaking her head over and over before she turns back to me, tears roll down my cheeks. “This was all a lie? You pursued me to do what?” She laughs. “It all makes sense. The way you were when we first met. The words, and the way you treated me. You wanted to hurt me because of the past?”

I flinch, but don’t argue.

“When did you know who I was?”

“After you stood me up, you deleted my old username, so I rejoined with another. But it was like you knew and deleted the account all together. But eventually, I found you on this new account and followed you to New York after you posted some pictures of yourself in Central Park.” I try to move closer, but she holds her hand out for me not to get any nearer.

“And you just happened to find me at work.” Her voice rising. Emotions flicker across her face, impossible to decipher. “You followed me to New York. You found out where I worked. You stalked me!”

My heart sinks as I tilt my head and stare at the ceiling. I can hardly deny it.

“What was your plan?” She gives a bitter laugh. “Revenge? Is that why you were weird with me in the beginning?”

I want to lie, but I wanted us to be truthful if we were to have a future. I nod. “But I couldn’t go through with it.”

She laughs bitterly. “Why not?”

“Because for the first time in my life, I feel an omega is really mine.”

“You were madly in love with Daria,” she hisses.

“Holly. For the first time in my life, I know what it feels like to need my omega. And that is you... Only you. You made my dark world light... you make it beautiful.”

Her eyes close for a moment as she sucks back a sob.

“You made it clear this was temporary, because you knew you only wanted revenge.” She flicks her index finger between us. “But now you decide you want me. I’m supposed to be on my knees and thanking my lucky stars that the great Aiden Ramsay wants me? Stupid fucking Holly Carter who fell for him.”

I can’t stop my lip from curling up in a cold snarl. “Really, you made it very clear you wanted a scent match and only a scent match.”

“Actually...” Her voice breaks as she stutters. “I never used to believe in scent matching. I was back to thinking it was bullshit when I fell for you.” She pauses, sighing loudly as she glances to the ceiling. “But now I’m not so sure.”

“Well, thank you, Ms. Carter,” I say, roughly. “For admitting your mistake,” I add bitterly. “I was falling for you too, yet it appears love isn’t as important as scent matching with an alpha.”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” she whimpers. “What’s your problem with scent matching?”

“Daria told me she scented me. Told me my scent was what I told her that hers was.” Guilt strikes through me as I tell her why I could never be truthful to her. But like me, she was scared of the same outcome as I was.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers. Her shoulders sag. “I’m sorry she broke your heart and you find it too hard to trust again.”

She’s already walking away. I stand and watch her.I’mlost.

We both have too much emotion stored up and if we continue this conversation tonight, I doubt we’re going to solve anything.

“We need some space apart,” she says.

I agree.

She turns my way. “Was it all an act?” Her eyes swim with tears. “You offered me all that money for ten days with you. Yet deep down, you hated every minute. You hated me being here because you have a problem withme.”

I can’t deny what she is saying, not when her eyes are focused on me. “Only in the beginning.”
