Page 16 of Rules We Break

“I’m proud of you.” She smiles and I fucking melt. I love this girl.

So I tell her. “I don’t know what I’d do without you and River.”

Her smile widens. “You’ll never have to find out.”

I move in and steal a kiss before she can stop me. She softens immediately and it’s only the wolf whistles that have me pulling back. River raises a brow and I shrug. What? Like he isn’t staring at her like a fucking snack.

I take a bite of pasta before I can kiss her again and moan around the mouthful.

River leans over Mia, so he can speak into my ear. “You keep making sounds like, that I’m taking you home.”

Fuck, doesn’t that send a thrill straight to my cock. So I take another bite, and moan louder, daring him to keep his promise.

He shakes his head and his gaze darkens in promise. Fuck, can we go yet?

Friendly chatter surrounds me as I eat. I look around and see all the people who are important to me in this room. Piper and Sidney laugh at whatever Jax and Lucas are shouting about. Both of the guys look at their girls with warm gazes, forgetting their argument. My heart swells, and I slide my hand down Mia’s back, making her shiver.

Mia leans in close to me. “What are you doing?”

I drop my hand lower, dipping under the fabric to run my finger over the seam of her ass. She sucks in a breath, cheeks flushing pink. She looks delicious when she’s riled up and all I want is to sit her on this table and eat my fucking dessert.

Her head tilts to the side, amusement tinted her voice. “Your parents are here.”

“I don’t care.” I push my finger deeper and she squirms, red lips forming an O-shape.The image in my head of her splayed on the table with my mouth between her thighs changes to thoughts of her under the table, her warm lips wrapped around my cock.

“Alex.” she half laughs half admonishes.

I rub the smooth skin of her ass, and give it a squeeze, leaning into her. “I fucking love this dress.”

“We’re going home.” River practically growls at the two of us. His breath coming out in pants and his eyes pitch black, completely taken over by his pupils.

“It’s early.” I smirk. More than happy to go.

“Now.” is his only reply.

The three of us stand and everyone gives us knowing looks as we announce our departure. I wave at my parents, not bothering to do formal goodbyes. I’m happy they showed up but everything isn’t suddenly perfect. It is going to take time to rebuild the relationship, as they need to prove this wasn’t a one-time thing. There’s a few friendly jokes, but River doesn’t give us time to respond. He pushes us out of the room, through the restaurant and to the car parked at the curb. He must have given them the heads up we were coming out.

“Alex.” My head spins at the familiar voice. My brother is standing just outside the restaurant door. He looks nervous, his eyes darting all around before landing on me. “I’m glad I caught you.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Her actually.” He points at Mia. “Mom and dad told me what she said.” he takes a deep breath and straightens his shoulders. “I’m sorry, Alex. I should’ve been there for you. I should’ve made them be there for you.” his voice turns more frustrated and sad. “I fucked up.”

“It wasn’t your job, it was theirs.” I say.

He shakes his head. “No, it is my job. I’m your brother. I should have been there for you. I should have made sure they were too. I let my own bullshit get in the way of us. I’d like to fix that. If you’re up to it.”

“How?” Warmth fills my chest where hope builds.

“If you’re okay with it, I want to come to your next game, and maybe we can hang out after?” He looks nervous.

“Yeah, I’d like that. I’ll send you tickets.”

“You don’t have to–”

“First step of getting closer to Alex is letting him take care of you.” Mia chimes in.

He nods. “Okay, then. I’m looking forward to it.” He steps forward awkwardly, and I wrap him in a hug. I release him, giving him a nod and watch as he heads inside as we climb into the back of the town car. It’s a tight fit, and I’m more than happy to pull Mia over my lap.
