“Amber Valentine. Is she going to make it?”
“Who are you, sir?”
“I’m her partner.”
“We’re FBI, in charge of an investigation she was involved in,” Andrew added.
“Mason. My name is Mason King. This is Andrew Cirkis.”
“Okay Mason, Andrew. I’m Dr. Robinson. We got her back for now, but only by means of life support. She’s on a ventilator and sedated for now. It will be touch and go for the next twenty-four hours to see if she can fight against whatever she was injected with. We have no idea what type of poison she was given. By any chance do you know what it was? It would make our job much easier if we knew what we were fighting against.”
“No. We don’t know what it is. Just that it’s a deadly fast-acting poison. Supposedly undetectable. The bastard that injected her won’t tell us anymore than that.”
“There’s nothing that’s truly undetectable. We’ve taken blood samples. We’ll find out what it is as soon as we can. For the moment, we’re keeping her in a coma to help her body fight against whatever it is.”
“Can I go in and see her?”
“We’re moving her into the ICU right now so you can see her there in about twenty minutes.”
“Okay, thanks Dr. Robinson.”
The doctor nodded. “We’ll do everything we can for her.” She turned and went back through to the emergency room.
Andrew wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into a bear hug. I clung on to him, burying my face in his shoulder.
“She’s going to make it,” he said, uncertainty in his voice.
“Yeah, I have to believe that. I could kill the Owens for this.”
“Get in line.”
I pulled away from Andrew. “I better call Amber’s parents. I don’t know their number though. I only know about a brother that she’s close to. Jackson.”
Andrew pulled out his phone. “I’ll find a number for him.”
I sat down on one of the plastic chairs and buried my head in my hands. I felt sick to my stomach. I couldn’t face the idea of her not pulling through this.
Andrew found a number for Amber’s brother and called him.
One of the nurses came through and directed us both through the hospital to the private room in the ICU where Amber was on a ventilator, tubes running from her mouth and arms. hooked up to all sorts of monitors that occasionally beeped out a sound. She still looked so pale, so frail and vulnerable. I bent down to kiss her on the forehead, then settled into a chair by her side.
Twelve hours later Jackson and Amber’s mom and dad came through the double doors and arrived at the waiting room. We told them all the information we had. That was all we could do. There was nothing else we could do. It was now a waiting game.
Chapter 32 – Amber
Iopenedmyeyesslowly, my vision clouding over. Blinking a few times, I could finally see. Where was I? I moved my head slowly to one side and saw a heart rate monitor machine. I was in the hospital. Turning my head the other way, I saw Mason slumped in a chair next to my bed. He looked as though he had been there for days. He was all crumpled, unshaven, and looked exhausted and uncomfortable.
“Mason…” I tried to speak, but my voice came out like a squeak.
I tried again, louder this time. “Mason…”
He woke up and a big smile curled his beautiful lips up.
“How long have I been out?” I croaked.
He looked at his watched. “It’s 6am Thursday. You’ve been in a coma for three days.”
“And you were here all that time?”
