“Yeah. Unfortunately, I can’t use the technique here. Otherwise, I’d do it to get out of these bonds.
“Mason, I’m scared.”
“I know sweetheart. Just hold on and hopefully Andrew will be able to get us out of this situation as quickly as he can. I’m so sorry to have dragged you into all this. If I hadn’t come on to you, you’d be home and safe.”
“But then we would never have had the beautiful times that we did.”
“I know. I wouldn’t change that for the world. I’m just so sorry that you got involved in all this danger. It’s the one thing I promised to myself, that I would keep you safe.”
“Don’t worry. They’re not going to do anything to me. I don’t believe the professor will use that poison on me.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure.”
“Well, if he does, then I’d better come out and say what’s been on my mind.”
She tried to turn and face me, using short jerky movements to inch her chair around in a semi-circle.
“At the end of the day, I don’t care about the fact that you lied to me to get close to me. I know that your feelings are real. What I want to know is that if we get out of this situation, what will happen with us then?”
I hesitated, thinking for a moment that there was a good chance we would not get out of this situation. “I want to be with you. I love you.”
She went silent. Tears rolled down her face and she pulled against her bonds in frustration. “I’ve never felt like this about anyone before. You’ve become my world. I can’t bear to think about being without you.”
“I feel exactly the same, Amber. I don’t want to be without you.”
“That’s a relief.”
“I’ve seriously over-stepped the bounds of my position though. I haven’t been very professional, which is another thing I’m sorry for. I’ll have to face the music with my boss when he finds out what I’ve been up to.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault. I’m the one who should have set up the boundaries. But I just couldn’t help myself when it came to you. You did something to me inside and I couldn’t stop myself from wanting you. It felt like I was swimming in a strong current that could only lead to you and any chance of trying to stop that journey was impossible. Trying to go on without you was just an exercise in misery.” I looked into her beautiful hazel eyes as they shimmered with another wave of tears she was trying to hold back.
“I love you so much,” she said, her voice hoarse with emotion.
“I love you, too. No matter what happens, remember that always.” I smiled at her luminous face.
“Now on a practical note, if only there was a way to get out of these bonds without cutting our wrists to pieces...”
She sighed, blinking to return to our real dilemma. “I’ve tried, but I can’t do it. It just cuts into my skin.”
“I know. Don’t keep trying. I don’t want you to hurt yourself.”
About three or four hours later, the door to the room slammed open. Professor Owens and that small woman Amber was friends with came into the room. They shut the door behind them. The woman was holding a couple bottles of water.
The professor held a gun in his hand. “While I hate the idea of creating a bloody mess, I will not hesitate to shoot either of you should you start doing anything I specifically told you not to do. I’m not a monster and will let you drink some water if you’re thirsty.”
The small woman untied our wrists so that we could hold our bottled water and take a few sips.
The professor stalked towards us and stood in front of me. He slapped me in the face.
“So, you’re just an interested party, huh? Tell me why you have a folio full of dead students’ information?”
He slapped me again. I reeled backwards in my seat.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
“We’ve been to your apartment. We saw the folio, your writing, the gun. We know you’re working for someone. The question is which agency?”
