I looked at her, hoping to see something that would tell me that she forgave me.
Amber looked me in the eyes, as if she could see into my soul. She reached over to hold my hand, and I suddenly knew things were going to be alright. I let out a shaky breath, not realize how tense I was holding myself.
“I’m mad at you, you know.”
“I know. I’m mad at myself, too.”
“But do you know why I’m mad at you?”
“Uhhh…”Shit, was this a trick question? Think, Mason.
She laughed and pulled me towards her on the bed. I laid down alongside her, so grateful to be able to hold her against me.
“I mean, I lied to you. I’d be mad at me for that alone.”
“Good answer. You hit it on the head. You lied to me. More than once. About some pretty big things. I can’t have a relationship with someone who lies to me.”
My heart stopped. “What are you saying, baby? Are you breaking up with me?” I leaned back to look at her, our faces inches apart on the pillow.
She looked solemn. “I can’t say the thought didn’t cross my mind as I was lying here listening to you and Adam in the hallway.”
Fuck, I couldn’t take this. I felt like my life was imploding. Gazing at her hazel eyes, I pleaded with her. “Don’t, Amber. I’m not going to accept us breaking up. I love you and you love me. I know I did a shitty thing all the way around but I promise you, I will never keep secrets from you again. I know what I did was wrong on so many levels. I hurt you and Adam deeply. And you have no idea how terrible I feel about hurting the people that I love. But I’ve learned my lesson. You have my word. I’ll never lie to you again. Please believe me.”
Her face serious and lips pursed, she intoned slowly, “You were a very, very, very, bad, boy, Mason.” She lightly slapped my face with each word that she uttered. She then grabbed my cheeks in her hands and leaned in close enough that we were almost kissing. “I want to punish you but I’m too weak to do anything but this. But if I were stronger, I would literally kick you in the balls.”
I winced at that visual.
“No more lies, Mason. No more. That’s a hard stop for me and I can’t go any further with you until I have your promise that that will never happen again. EVER. Do you get me?” She growled this time. She was trying to sound mean, but my girl didn’t have it in her to be mean so it came across as a kittenish growl. But I got her meaning, and I knew she was deadly serious.
“I promise you, Amber. No more lies. That’ll never happen again.” I kissed her gently on her lips.
She smiled happily.
“Ummm…”
She did a double take. “What do you mean, ummm?” She yelled.
“Well, you know I still work for the FBI. So sometimes there might be information I have to keep from family and friends.”
She bit her lip in thought. Taking a deep breath, she conceded, “Okay, I’ll give you that.”
“So, you forgive me?” I asked quietly.
“I do. It wasn’t right, keeping those lies alive. And I hate that you hurt Adam in the process. I hate that I hurt Adam, also. But I understand where it came from. I love you and I can’t be mad that you did it because you were afraid to lose me.”
I closed my eyes in relief and then proceed to kiss her with a mix of passion and euphoria, knowing that we would be okay. I had Amber back and I would never take that for granted ever again.
Chapter 34 – Amber
Isigheddeeply.Thiswould be my last time in Dr Feldstein’s office if I could help it. I was tired of talking about it, going through it, and digging everything up.
“I know you’re tired. But there’s a lot to unpack here. You’ve spent the best part of a year thinking that Adam was dead, but now you find out he’s alive. And you’ve only just found out that the man you’ve fallen in love with is his half-brother. Like I said, that’s a lot to unpack.”
“I’m just so tired of the whole thing. I want it all to be over. I wish I could make everything better for Adam.”
“But that’s not going to happen. He’ll eventually get over you and move on. But it will take time.”
I sighed again. “I know. I just feel so bad for him.”
