She cackled. “Like I would tell you!”
“Fucking tell me where they’ve taken him?”
She punched me in the face and it landed on my nose. I saw sparks for a moment and wondered if my nose was broken. I punched her back, hitting her in the eye. She screeched at me and began to pummel me again, coming at me with the full force of her body.
I pushed back against her with all my strength, and she went flying backwards. Her body seemed to fall in slow motion and her head hit off the corner of her study desk as she went down. She landed and was knocked out cold.
I stood there for a moment.Oh god. Was she dead? Was I going to go to jail for murder?I was silently freaking out.
Kneeling down, I checked her pulse. She was still breathing; she was just knocked out. A rush of relief came over me. Quickly, I stood up, ran out of her room, closing the door behind me, and ran back into my own dorm room. I locked it just in case.
I called Mason. His phone just went to voicemail.Shit!I called Andrew.
“Cirkis here.”
“Andrew, it’s Amber. I’m really worried about Mason. I was just attacked by Beany and she said that the professor is going to abduct Mason and torture him. They seem to know something isn’t right with his story. I don’t know if his cover’s completely blown, but there’s definitely something up.”
“Are you okay? Did you get hurt? Shit. Let me ping his phone and see if he answers.” The line went silent for a moment, then Andrew came back on. “Yeah, he’s not answering. Okay, tell me where you are.”
“In my dorm room. I’m okay, nothing is broken or bleeding. I’ve knocked out Beany but I’m scared she’s going to wake up and come after me.”
“Thatta girl. You’re such a badass. I’m not sure why Beany is a source of this information but I’ll go with it. Just get to the library or somewhere where there are a lot of people. Do this quickly before that little bitch wakes up. Call me when you get there and I’ll have someone pick you up. In the meantime, I’ll trace Mason’s phone location and find out where he is.”
He hung up.
I stood and looked around, still feeling indecisive. It didn’t feel right to do nothing for Mason when I knew he was probably in danger now. Beany had said that The Order was going to abduct him.Off the street? And take him where? To the woods? It seemed like the most likely place. I tried to remember how to get to the woods from the few times I had been over the last month. Mason and I had developed a liking for going to the woods where we’d participated in the bacchanalia and would have sex there.
Completely ignoring Andrew’s request that I go to the library to get picked up, I hailed a cab and got in, asking the driver to take me to the woods. We drove in silence for about fifteen minutes and I asked the driver to drop me at the edge of the woods. I walked the rest of the way in, quickly finding the clearing. My heart was racing and I felt like I could have a heart attack any moment. The adrenaline was coursing through me and I just wanted to find Mason and make sure I helped him if he was in trouble.
Luckily the woods were flat and the clearing was fairly easy to find. I saw lights from lanterns and heard voices. That must be them!
I hid behind a large tree and peeked out surreptitiously.
Mason was there, surrounded by a group of eight people in cloaks. I couldn’t see who they were, so I moved a little closer to try and get a better view.
I could hear them questioning Mason.
I shifted position to give my knees a break, and accidentally stood on a dried piece of wood. It snapped, making a loud crack. Immediately, the group in the clearing turned their heads and saw me hiding in the trees. I jumped backwards to hide.
“Look, there’s someone hiding in the trees!”
“Quick, catch them!”
I took off and ran as fast as I could.
Turning back, I could hear them chasing after me. I ran faster and faster through the trees, tripping and hopping over the brush on the ground. It was pitch black, so I scraped my face and my hands as I pushed my way through the thick bushes, trying to figure out which way to go so that I wouldn’t be caught.
“There she is! Get her!”
I turned to look where the voice was coming from and ran at full tilt. Then, I tripped and fell over, banging my head on a fallen tree branch.
“Ahhhh!” I yelled, rolling around on the ground in pain. Scrambling to my feet, I was surrounded by three people who stood over me.
“Get up!”
I was hauled to my feet by someone who grabbed me by my arm and dragged me back through the woods to the clearing. It turned out I hadn’t run very far as we reached the clearing very quickly. I was pushed into the middle of the group of robed figures, and they formed a circle around me. Mason stood beside me; his face expressionless.
“What are you doing here?” He mouthed silently. I looked at him hopelessly.
