Chapter 29– Mason
IpulledProfessorOwensaside after class the next day.
“Amber has agreed to do it, the thing we discussed at your house.”
He looked at me and smiled with a satisfied look on his face. The man was clearly delighted with the decision. “I’m assuming you mean option two and not option one?”
“I will never share Amber with anyone. I already told you that,” I growled with barely suppressed anger.
The professor chuckled. “Shame, but I understand your territorial needs.”
I could have smashed his face in right there, investigation be damned. “Good. Just so we’re clear, it’s a private room and no one else will be able to gain entry?”
“Yes. You can lock it from the inside. You won’t even know we’re there.”
“Fine. When do you want this to happen?”
“Tonight, at midnight will be perfect.”
“Okay. We’ll be there.”
“Was it hard?”
“Was what hard?”
“To get Amber to agree to perform with you?”
“No. She wants to help me get into the inner circle.”
“Ah, she wants to be next to the seat of great power. What an adventurous young lady.”
“Something like that, yes. Now, you said you would get me the list of names of people who would be watching us tonight?”
“Yes. Here you go.” He handed me a folded piece of paper with handwritten names. This was just what I needed.
“Very well. We shall see you at midnight at The Corinthian.”
I left the classroom and took out my phone. I photographed the list of names and sent it to Andrew so that he could investigate them and see if any of them correlated to the numbers and names on the fake accounts. He would get background information on them all, which would help when we finally took Professor Owens down.
I dialed Amber’s number.
“It’s on. Tonight, at midnight.”
“So soon? Okay. I’ll come over to your place to prepare.”
“I’ll come and pick you up.”
I got in my car and went over to Amber’s dorm room. She came out after fifteen minutes with an overnight bag and dress on a hanger and sat in the passenger seat.
“Are you sure you’re ready to do this?”
“As sure as I’ll ever be.” She trembled slightly, so I drew her in close and kissed her on the forehead. I felt so guilty about all of this and wished we could pull out and not go through with it. Wishful thinking…
“I’m so sorry to put you through this.”
“It’s okay. I’m okay.”
I looked over at her one last time before putting the car into drive.
