He looked at me with pleasure and a hint of uncertainty in his eyes.
“Hi. How are you?”
I took a deep breath to center myself. “Okay, I guess. Can we talk?”
“Sure. Shall we go for coffee?”
I nodded. It felt super awkward and I didn’t really know what to say to him or how to start. So, we went to the Copper Pot in silence. I looked back to see if the professor was still watching me. I felt relief that he seemed to have disappeared.
Mason ordered coffee for us and we sat at a table in the back corner of the coffee shop.
He put his hand out and covered mine. I noticed again how big and muscular it was compared to my hand. The warmth sent electrical impulses through my arm and down in between my legs. I never thought I would find a guy’s hand so sexy but Mason’s hand was revving up my hormones. I felt like I could orgasm from looking at his hand and imagining how he pleasured me with those talented fingers. So, It was obvious the feelings for him were still there. Of course they were. No matter what his name was.
“How have you been?” He asked gently.
“Not great.”
“I can understand why.”
“Mason…I still want to call you Christos…it’s still all so strange…Was any of it real?”
He looked at me with deep hurt in his eyes. “Yes. All my feelings for you are real.”
“I see.”
I couldn’t process that at the moment. I had too many unanswered questions.
“Does Adam know about us?”
“No. I haven’t told him.”
“Oh fuck,” I whispered.
“I know. The whole thing is a shitshow. I shouldn’t have gotten involved with you. I was only supposed to befriend you and see if you had any information or if you were involved.”
“You thought I was involved in the deaths?” My eyes widened in horror.
“I had to consider everything, even that you could be involved somehow. Although, I never believed it. You were too heartbroken over Adam. Plus, you had several alibis among your friends who were with you during your weekend trip when Adam’s ‘death’ happened.”
“That weekend will be burned into my brain forever. And, it turns out he wasn’t even dead. I mean, I’m obviously happy he’s alive, I didn’t mean…”
“I know what you meant.”
“Things are so complicated.”
“I know.”
“It’s taken me these three days to try and get my head together to even speak to you. I don’t know what to do about you and me right now. But, I do know that I care about you just as much as before and I want to help your investigation. So, if there’s anything I can do then just let me know.”
“Thank you, but we’re close to wrapping it up. We have a large team of investigators working with Adam to do a deep dive into the professor’s past and present activities. His victims list comes from several high-profile families whose reach extends into the halls of Congress. Those congressmen have paved the way to making this investigation a top priority so we have been given plenty of FBI agents and support staff to help with our investigation.”
“Can you tell me what you’ve found out so far?” I pleaded.
“I can share some of this information. I trust you to keep this to yourself. Leaking this intel would jeopardize several months of hard work.” He lifted his right eyebrow and started intently into my eyes.
“I promise. I know this information is confidential.”
He nodded slowly, taking a long slow deep breath.
