The man stood up. “Where the fuck have you been? I haven’t been able to get hold of you all night.”

Christos stepped towards him slowly. “We were out doing initiations for The Order.”

“You should always have your phone on.”

Christos nodded. “It was on. I must have just missed your calls. Sorry, I was busy dealing with all of that.”

“Yeah, well, things have become a little bit more serious. Do you want to do this in front of Amber or shall we go somewhere more private?”

I wondered how the hell this guy knew my name. What the hell was going on?

Christos nodded to the guy. “We can go somewhere more private.”

He opened the sliding door to the balcony and they both stepped outside, sliding the door behind them. I stood and watched them talking. I strained to hear but couldn’t hear anything.

They looked like they were having a very heated conversation. Christos’ facial expressions went from anger to worry and then firmly shut down like he was devoid of all emotion. I wondered what they were talking about. The big guy didn’t give off a jilted lover vibe. And he also didn’t seem to be just a friend stopping by for a drink. There was something else going on, but I had no clue what it was.

They eventually came back in the room. Christos’ face was ashen and his brow was set with worry.

“Christos, what is going on? Who is this guy?”

Christos turned to look at me, then he looked at the other guy, who nodded. Christos looked down at his feet, clasped and unclasped his hands, and then looked up at me.

“Amber, I have something to tell you.”

I waited for him to speak. He hesitated, took a deep breath, looked at the other man again then spoke.

“My name isn’t Christos Ianthos and I’m not really a post grad student. I’m Mason King and I’m an FBI agent. I was sent here to investigate the deaths of the students who were linked to The Order.”

My heart just about stopped.

“What!?”

He took a step towards me. “Amber, I’m sorry. I couldn’t tell you who I really was. But now things have gotten more serious, so I guess it’s time you knew.”

“You’re not Christos? What’s your name? Mason? I…I don’t believe this. And who is this guy?”

“This is Andrew, my partner at the FBI. He’s been working the intel while I’ve been undercover.”

“No fucking way. Are you for real?”

“We’re very much for real, ma’am,” Andrew said.

I took a step backwards. I couldn’t take it all in. Christos wasn’t Christos. He’d been lying to me this whole time.

“There’s something else you should know,” Mason said, quietly.

I blinked at him. “What?”

“Adam is alive. He’s in a Witness Protection Program.”

I froze. Time, life, everything stopped.

My hand came up to my throat and I staggered backwards. I couldn’t breathe.

“Amber, I’m so sorry about this. It must be a complete shock for you. Why don’t you sit down…”

“Adam is alive? How? What do you mean? I can’t…” I trailed off as my mind just about exploded.
