“Good. Send me a copy of that. Two sets of eyes always helps.”

“Will do. Is there anything else on your end?”

I hesitated, then sighed. “Actually, there is…Um, the situation with Amber has evolved.”

“In what way?”

“In a 'we’re dating' kind of way.”

Silence. Then a deep sigh from Andrew.

“Shit. I hope you know what you’re doing. I mean, you could get yourself into all kinds of trouble dating someone you’re supposed to be investigating. Not to mention the fact that she was the girlfriend of one of the victims.”

“I know. I tried to stay away from her. But I couldn’t. There’s just something about her that draws me to her and I want to see where it goes.”

“Well, if you’re sure you know what you’re doing then I can’t really say anything. Just make sure Wachowski doesn’t hear about it. He’d have a fit.”

“I’ll keep it on the down low.”

“Okay good. And keep her safe too. Don’t go putting her in any danger.”

“As if I would.”

“Yeah right, I know. This is so not like you, bro. You’ve never done anything like this before.”

“I’ve never met anyone like Amber before either.”

“Fair enough.”

“Okay dude. I’d better go. I got whisked away in the middle of the night and Amber was sleeping in my bed.”

“Oh, you’d better go sort that out.”

“Yeah. There’s a missed call and a voicemail from her. Shit. She’ll be frantic.”

“Okay. Talk to you soon.”

“See ya.”

I ended the call and headed back through the clearing. Everyone was starting to leave. I ran up towards the van that had brought me.

“Any chance of a ride back home?” I asked the driver.

“Sure. Hop in.”

I arrived back at my apartment and opened the door. Amber was sitting on the sofa waiting for me. She stood up as I came inside.

“Where the hell have you been? And why do you have a gun and a folio of dead students from the university?”

What the hell? She had been through my things?Anger flashed through me. I almost lashed out, but held it in, knowing that I could make the situation worse. She looked confused and angry.

I moved towards the sofa and put my hand out to placate her.

“I can explain everything. Just let me get in and get a drink. I’m parched. It’s been a long night.”

I reached out and clasped her hand in mine. She looked down at my hand and suddenly let go. She backed away, a frown furrowing her brow.

“What is it? What’s wrong?”
